Daily Routine

Recommended Posts

Hello! I'm new to the forum...and to chicken ownership! (hatch)

After years of wishing, dreaming and begging, I am now the proud owner of two lovely 16 week old girls...

Suki

and Toph

I've been getting up at 6am to open the Eglu door for them...only for them to stay put!! This morning Toph came out 20 minutes later, had a nibble and returned to the 'glu (red eglu)

In the end (at 1:30pm) I opened the side hatch to check they were ok (Suki was in the nest box so I could only see her tail feathers..!)...and they decided it was time to get up and face the day (tut...kids! )

I know it's early days so I though I'd ask - what are your daily routines with your chickens?

Hubby opens cube door about 6.30, they come out as they please, I let them out to FR about 9.30/10am, I poo pick in the afternoon, top up feed and give them clean water, they put themselves to bed and we go and close cube door and do a head count, treat in the afternoon

My coop is on slabs, so I leave the pop hole open. They get up at around 6.30am. Around 9am I let them out to destroy the garden :wink: , and I clean out the droppings from the floor and nest box. I then change their water and top up their feed. They rampage around until either school run time, or it gets dark. They then put themselves to bed, and I shut the run door before it gets dark :)

Hi Congratulations on your new chicks they are gorgeous.

Our daily routine is open eglu at 7.15 check water, food and inside eglu for cleanliness and clean out if necessary, free range pretty most of the day. But twice a week is sufficient for cleaning.

Shut Eglu door when dusk or if they have put themselves to bed and head count to make sure all are snuggly inside. Lock run.

I think the chicks pretty much get into your routine when you let them out, mine do anyway.

Good luck with your new chickens...they make great pets.

The door is always open so they can come out/go to bed when they want. Slightly different routine depending on the time of year -

BST

Me out checking the girls by 8am and attending to food/drink and clean bedding as necessary. Pop out for chats at coffee break, lunch, tea break times, end of work and hanging out washing times.

Bed time check (this could be when I go to bed - they will stay up later than me in the height of summer  ).

GMT

Me out checking the girls around 8-8:30am. Attending to food/drink and clean bedding as necessary about 9am (or if it's bad weather at about 10:30). Pop out for chats at coffee break, lunch and tea break times.

Bed time check at end of working day.

BST and GMT they tend to get a treat at tea break time.

They might have a FR if I am doing garden stuff or if I about and can sit in the garden/conservatory and do 'stuff' while keeping an eye on them - Saturday ams and/or Sunday pms only.

Get up at 6:00am, let the pekin ladies out into the run, poo-pick the garden, fill up food and water, (every-other day i clean them out), 7:00am i let Cheryl, betty and rita out into the garden, along with the pekin ladies to free range happily, also clean them out if nessacary (or just poo-pick). they all seem to want to lay around 8:00am ish so i collect the eggs at 9:00am, then just chill out. wehn it starts to get dark and cheryl comes to the patio door, i go out and lock the chickens up for the night and put cheryl in with the hybrids, then repete this every morning :)

goodluck with your girls, they are stunning!

*welcome to the fourm

Welcome to the forum. Your girls are gorgeous. :D

My daily routine is.....Let them out about 6ish to FRin the garden whilst I get ready. I fill up their food and water. Empty the poo trays out, give the bars a quick wipe down and replenish the nest with Auboise. 8ish I let the cockerel out to join the girls for a 15 minute FR..whilst i put what ever greens I have in the runs for them to peck at throughout the day. They then get put in their runs (with the help of a handful of mealworm). If still light when I get home from work they FR till they put themselves to bed. I collect any eggs and do a quick poo clear up. They put themselves to bed, I lock them up and then put food containers away.

On a weekend they tend to FR all day. I also clean out the coop and all the water and food containers. Also rake the run and put down some Stanslan F to keep it fresh.

Hi Roobaloo and welcome to the forum :D

Your girls are lovely and looking very happy.

I leave the cube and eglu doors open as the are in a WIR so they let themselves out and put themselves to bed.

I try not to let them out at specific times because its amazing how quickly they get used to it and kick up a noisy fuss if not let out at the that same time. So now, I let them out to freerange at differenct times of day.

I always make sure they are back in the WIR an hour or two before bedtime though so they can have some treats and fill up before bed.

I clean them out twice a week.

I take out fresh water and food about 8am, girls are out by then and waiting by the gate for me as i do not lock them in at night as i have 2 significant fences so no mr fox (touch wood!)

At about 1.30/2pm i return home and check for eggs and pick up any droppings from the coop, im checking for eggs daily so i may as well clean the coop as well!

top up the water if required and replace a little easy bed where required.

And then when the light fades and the girls go to bed i bring in the food to prevent vermin, the water i leave out while its not freezing so they have access to it in the morning.

Get up and let chickens out of the Cube at 7.15-ish. At same time replenish food and water. About 9.30 to 10.00 if we are at home, let girls out FR. This gives them time to eat plenty of pellets and lay their eggs in the nest box instead of at random locations round the garden.

Poo pick nest box and poo trays at some point during the day, and top up Hemcore in nest box and poo trays. Top up grit if needed. Usually check chickens over once or twice a week at this time, but have been checking one of them daily.

Clean out Cube once every 1-2 weeks (that is full scrub out with Poultry Shield), otherwise just wipe over roost bars 1-2x per week.

Clean out run and replace Hemcore every 3 to 6 weeks, and put down Stalosan.

"Chickens in a basket" - i.e. back in the run whenever both of us are out, or if we don't go out, about 1/2 hour before dusk - this is now about 7.15pm but in winter can be as early as 3.15pm. At this time I have been checking the crop of one of my chooks to make sure she is having enough to eat. Put down a few mealworms to keep them occupied.

"Chickens in a box" - i.e. back in the Cube - they do this at dusk, and we shut the pop-hole when we go out to check the garage (and let out the cat who has inevitably got stuck in there during the day!) - this is now about 8.30 to 9.00pm but in winter can be as early as 5.00 to 6.00pm.
