ross81
Hi I keep reading on forums about people feeding their quail chicken layers pellets. When i was reading up on quail before getting them i found a website, that unfortunatly i can no longer find, that feeding quails this causes rickets has anyone else heard this? xScrunchee
No I haven't heard that but was planning on feeding my future quail layers pellets so I will look into this. Thank you for mentioning it
xScrunchee
Well I have looked and looked and cannot find any info. I have also been looking a breeders websites and quite a few of them feed the adult quail layers pellets. I wonder if you found the info on a site promoting a special quail mix ?? If you do find the site where you read about it-please let me know as I would hate to feed them something which was no good for them Many thanks Jay
ladyjulian
*googles* I can only find one website which says that layers' pellets can cause rickets in quail, and it's here. Since the author also confuses his coturnix with his japanese quail, and only breeds them to feed to falcons, I'm not sure he's right. There are other bits of good information about rickets in poultry generally, but if layers' pellets are a sufficiently complete food for chickens, I can't imagine that they'd cause rickets in quail. Rickets is a vit D deficiency / calcium imbalance and the layers' pellets I use definitely contain vit D and calcium. I'm sure quail can suffer from rickets but I don't think there's a causative link between layers' pellets and rickets. Quite apart from not being able to work out the biology of it, the internet would be heaving with it if there was a link!
Janty
Marriages do a special quail pellet. Allen and page don't but when I telephoned them, they advised feeding Specialist Poultry Breeder pellets as they are higher in protein. I did this for a while but I'm now feeding my quail Garvo quailmixture. They really enjoy it and eat tons!
ladyjulian
[thread hijack] Janty, where do you get your Garvo quail stuff? I can't seem to find an online supplier...
Lewis
I'd think layers would be fine Thats what I always had mine on, and the farm who breed them always do the same. Only thing different is that they need higher protein as chicks - I used Turkey crumb, and just gave them scrambled egg and sometimes mealworms
Falkor
[thread hijack] Janty, where do you get your Garvo quail stuff? I can't seem to find an online supplier... She got them from me, who got them from a supplier over in Brackley. Where abouts in the country are you?

Janty
[thread hijack] Janty, where do you get your Garvo quail stuff? I can't seem to find an online supplier... I was going to say that I got them from Falkor originally but I now have a supplier that lives about five minutes away. He orders it for his pigeons and will order for other people as well to top up the order. It was quite funny the first time I collected them. I contacted him originally by phone. Then I got a text from him saying that they had arrived. I told hubby that I was going and off I went. When I got there a massive Alsation met me at the door growling and barking. The man opened the door telling me not to look at the dog or talk to him. I explained that I was ok with dogs and that I had grown up with Alsations. The man relaxed a bit and said that even though he was still a puppy, he scared most people as he still jumps up. The man then got the biggest kitchen knife out of the drawer and he is the kind of man that talks with his hands so I was watching this kitchen knife getting waved about and thinking to myself 'Oh my goodness, I've come out to a strange house without giving hubby the address and this man is waving a knife at me and he has a huge dog'. Given my history, it wasn't a good idea to say the least. The man must have seen my face so he explained that the knife was to open the packaging around the bags of feed. then I got the job of holding the dog's lead. Cor, he was strong. ross81
Hi Ladyjulian thats the website I read it on. You say the author confuses his coturnix with his japanese quail, coturnix are japanese quail and also italian and a few others. Anyway thanks all for this i now feel a bit happier with giving them poultry layers pellets
