frugal living recipes pleeeeeease

no recipes but tips for frugal shopping.

go to Aldi and buy whatever fruit/veg is on offer. They have a regular selection of fruits and veggies for 49p.

I can do a weeks shopping for me, DH and the dog for about £36.

I use mince quite a bit. i make big batches of spag bol sauce/chilli con carne/mince in onion gravy.

spag bol sauce can go with pasta or buy some tortilla wraps from Aldi and spoon some spag bol sauce into them, roll up, top with cheese sauce= cannelloni.

I do the same with chilli con carne, voila, burrittos or enchilladas or whatever they're called!

with the mince in onion gravy you can make you own faux findus crispy pancakes, just use the same tortilla wraps, cut in half, put some mince in and fold over and seal with a mix of beaten egg and a bit of flour to make a glue. Shallow fry and then keep warm in the oven while you cook whatever you're having with them.

go to the supermarket at the end of the day as the bread is very often on offer for next to nothing.

also, make your own pastry because if you do you can make a pie out of virtually anything! ;)

take one large tin of corned beef and cube it, then add a chopped onion and some par boiled carrots. Put this mix into an oven prrof dish top with creamy mashed potato and cook in the oven for about 35 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with seasonal veg. We pretty much always have frozen peas with it :D

It makes a very tasty prepare ahead store cupboard meal, one that we often do when we are on holiday. :D

Scrummy dhal recipe

Make up at least a pint of vegetable bouillon, bring it to the boil and add 500g of chana dhal. Cover and simmer, adding hot water as necessary.

After at least an hour, in a separate pan, fry:

* A glug of vegetable oil

* Four large onions (finely chopped in one direction only)

* A whole head of garlic (crushed or chopped)

Let the onions cook down slowly for at least 20 minutes before adding them to the dhal. Into this mixture, add:

* Two big lumps of ginger, peeled and finely chopped

* A medium tablespoon of Garam Masala

* The juice of at least one lemon

* Pepper

Now cook for another hour on a very low heat, stirring as much as you can. You can’t overcook this recipe, but you can burn it quite easily. You can’t add too much garlic or ginger, either.

Serve piping hot, with yoghurt, rice, and veggies if you want them.

(NB This recipe comes from The Beloved Cohab who is a garlic fanatic. If you don't like your dhal to stave off vampires, you may want to use less.)

We had nettle risotto tonight. Can't get much more frugal than that. Blanch young nettles in boiling water for 30 seconds then puree and add to the risotto when it is half cooked. It makes it a vibrant green risotto. And it is very satisfying to get rid of them (although we have got too many to eat).
