Disinfectants

Recommended Posts

I am a tad confused with all the various poultry disinfectants. I have 3 disinfectants available to use for my wooden hen house and coop, which will be kept on concrete slabs with micanthus and hemcore bedding in the run & coop.

I have BioDri which is a powder to be sprinkled on the run and coop floor for long-term disinfection and this helps in keeping smells under control I believe, so that's straight forward enough.

I also have Poultry Shield and Virkon S. Am I right in thinking that Poultry Shield is best used as a spray in the coop and applied weekly or so to routinely clean the sleeping / laying / nesting area and keep red mite at bay whereas Virkon S is stronger and should be used to do a major clean every few weeks and is used as a wash and scrub on the floors after the old bedding material is removed?

Guidance would be most welcome.

I use poultry shield for cleaning I my opion it's the best cleaner you can get I say this after I use it to clean the plastersol panels that I used to make the coop roof so say they were filthy is an understatment thay'ed been in the window best part of 8 years plus they were covered in compo from the building work that had resulted in them beening surplus to requirements they cleaned up better than new with poultry shield the cleaner we use at work did even touch the dirt

I even use it to clean the greenhouse

If you have a respiratory problem in the house I have been recommended by the vet to use virkon as its the best thing against airborne viruses. I use poultry shield for my normal cleans and virkon if I'm doing a major clean and I'm confident the house will dry.
