ISCA
I am a tad confused with all the various poultry disinfectants. I have 3 disinfectants available to use for my wooden hen house and coop, which will be kept on concrete slabs with micanthus and hemcore bedding in the run & coop. I have BioDri which is a powder to be sprinkled on the run and coop floor for long-term disinfection and this helps in keeping smells under control I believe, so that's straight forward enough. I also have Poultry Shield and Virkon S. Am I right in thinking that Poultry Shield is best used as a spray in the coop and applied weekly or so to routinely clean the sleeping / laying / nesting area and keep red mite at bay whereas Virkon S is stronger and should be used to do a major clean every few weeks and is used as a wash and scrub on the floors after the old bedding material is removed? Guidance would be most welcome.

Egluntyne
Ditto. Fab stuff and has excellent cleaning properties. I use both a spray and a brush and bucket, depending on what I am cleaning.
JustMyCluck
I got some VirkonS when the threat of bird flu was rife so I use it for a deep clean of the house and run about once a year, then I use poultry shield on the house a couple of times a year, mainly against red mite though. Seems to work well enough.
Daphne
If you have a respiratory problem in the house I have been recommended by the vet to use virkon as its the best thing against airborne viruses. I use poultry shield for my normal cleans and virkon if I'm doing a major clean and I'm confident the house will dry.
chickyhazel
We use poultry shield and I think it is the most useful for regular use. I would only use something else, like virkon s, if there was a major problem with pests.
