Possible respiratory infection - bit worried :(

Recommended Posts

About 10 days ago Sybil started to sneeze a little. I posted on here, and checked her over and she seemed fine. Since then I've been putting cider vinegar in their water every day. She has been sneezing since then, but not often or for prolonged periods, and it hasn't seemed worrying to me or getting worse. Today she is sneezing more, and has her beak open a little when she breathes, I saw some fluid fly out of her beak when she sneezed once, and she is taking herself off from the others a little sometimes (but not all the time). She is still laying though.

I called the vets but it is now our emergency one till Monday morning. Our vet did have a chat with me, but was all doom and gloom (he usually is! ) and may as well said she was on her way out! He said I could call and take her in on Monday if she hadn't improved but often antibiotics didn't work :( I'm now sitting here trying to be not worried but not succeeding. Any reassurance or advice would be gratefully appreciated if you have any. Thanks.

Its strange that she has had it for ten days and the others arent affected by it

I'd isolate her just in case she is infectious and try another type of bedding (she could be allergic to the one you use)

At the vets be assertive and ask for Baytril or Tylan to clear up any infection, antibiotics have a good sucess rate on these sorts of things

A product to have in your first aid box is Citricidal, this is a natural product which can help get rid of sneezing if used early - I'd say its too late for home remedies in this case but in general its useful to have

Thanks Redwing. Funnily enough, when we were doing the big weekly Eglu clean-out today, I had that thought about the bedding, especially as no one else was affected. We have been using straw, but changing it often. I have changed to shredded paper today just in case. Weare going to the farm shop tomorrow to get more pellets so will check for citricidal too.

I guess we shall just have to wait and see.

I have a disable girl doing the same, her name is Rosie Hoppity Wheezy, the worrying thing for her and us id that the sneezing brings on what looks like an asthma attack, and 2 vets can find nothing wrong in the past!

she got more whhezy to the point where she is now on Baytril, whether it really is helping is open to speculation, but respiratory infections can soon take hold. Citrcidal may help a lot, but get her some antibiotics as redwing says, maybe consider another vet as cannot say this one sounds very helpful! :( It could be allergic and the air IS very dusty, probably a coincidence but Rosy has def got worse since planes have been grounded!!!!!! :?:?:?
