Is This A Prolapse?

Recommended Posts

I've never had a hen with a prolapse so not quite sure what I'm looking for but I'm guessing that Sausage my gorgeous bantam Salmon Faverolle has one :( She started crouching a few weeks ago and was increasingly vocal so I knew she was about to start laying. Last Thursday she was frantically dashing between all of the nestboxes and seemed very aggitated. I just knew she wasn't herself and that something wasn't quite right with her and when I picked her up I noticed she felt wet around her vent. I had a look and could see what I assume is a small prolapse and there was quite a bit of yellowish discharge. When I push gently it does go back in but doesn't stay in for long. She eventually did manage to lay her first ever egg and thankfully hasn't laid again since. The prolapse is still there, sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller, sometimes not there at all. The discharge remains though and she spends a lot of time cleaning that area.

I think I'm going to lose her aren't I?

I've tried to take a photo of it and this is the best I can do, you can see a thumb nail sized protrusion from her vent:

Tasha's probably right it's inflamed and she could have infected laying track.

I would take her to a vet and get antibiotic cover and some metacam to settle it down. I'd also keep her in subdued light and keep her off layers to stop her laying while it settles down. It's good that it does go back sometimes so can't irritate her all the time. I would check her for eggs every now and then. If she strains laying again before everything calms down it could prolapse again. What I did was break the egg to prevent it happening and then made sure it was all out.

I had a newly laying chicken that had a prolapse, admittedly worse but she survived so you may not lose her but get treatment quick. In the meantime pop a bit of anusol on to reduce any swelling.

It was a prolapse, it didn't get any better, Sausage was increasingly distressed so I've just despatched her :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

The vet had basically said if she can't even lay one egg without prolapsing it really doesn't bode well for the future. There was obviously something fundamentally flawed in her laying tackle and the clock was ticking from the day she was born. She's the second Faverolles I've lost before adulthood, I'm destined not to have one so it's a breed I'll be leaving alone for a while.
