Hatching with a broody

Recommended Posts

Hi.

My frizzle, pumpkin, has recently become broody and yesterday i was offered six fertile eggs to put under her. This would be the first time that i have hatched any chicks so i have a few questions to ask! I realise that i will have to separate the broody and put her in seperate accommodation but what would be suitable for this purpose? Also is it too cold outside at the moment for her and the chicks and should i bring her inside to hatch them? These are my only concerns at the moment as i have contingency plans for any unwanted cockerels.

Thanks

Sally

Yes, move the hen now and sit her on some normal eggs for a couple of days to ensure that she will continue to sit - many get distracted by a move

A rabbit hutch or similar would be ok as a broody box, even a large cardboard box in a dark and foxproof garage or shed is fine

Its ok at this time of year for them, extra shelter would be appreciated so keep them in their broody box/rabbit hutch for a few days then let them out in to a small sheltered run (a run attached to the rabbit htch or something)

The hen will need to stay with the chicks for at least six weeks so as long as you have somewhere big enough for that time it will be fine

The chicks will then need to stay separate from you other birds until they are about 18 weeks old

My broody currently resides in one of these which I picked up from ebay for a tenner but they sell them at my local garden centre for about £45 new. I have put the ark on slabs for extra security and have also put mesh over the existing mesh as I can see my cat taking an interest and putting her paws in

When the chickies hatch  they will stay in the ark with mum for a week or so and then I will move them into the bigger run and housing.

Hi.Tthank you for your very helpful and quick replies! Falkor that is the ark that i had in mind to get from my local garden centre so think i will pop there today and buy one. I have been given six large eggs to hatch and my frizzle is obviously quite small, do you think that these will be too many for her to sit on?

Thanks again for your advice.
