"Tricky" question

Recommended Posts

I have a tricky question and would appreciate some views.

We are looking for some friends for Mrs Pepperpot who is currently living alone in her Eglu following the sad departure of her friend Bon Bon :(

I have to say though that Mrs P seems quite happy and has lived alone for 12 months, albeit she has a friendly free range rabbit (who thinks she's a chicken :D )for company during the day.

Our delima is what breed to get as I would like a legbar for blue eggs and a red Hybrid . I have read that Legbars can be flighty and nervous. I also have only one eglu so introducing two new Pullets to Mrs P could be interesting?

Has anyone been in a similar position and how did the introductions go.

What breeds did you get

What breeds should I go for. I will be getting 2. :D

I will keep you posted and put some photos on

Thanks

No knowledge on Legbars but we introduced 2 pullets to our lonely single hen in similar circumstances, though she was only on her own for 2 weeks. We only have one eglu too, but I was so concerned about taking intros slowly I didn't want to put them in together at first. The way we did it was to separate our run with chicken wire and leave a plastic recycling box for them to roost in if they needed it (though to be honest, they just huddled on top of it overnight and they got on fine even though it was cold at night.

We let the lone hen free-range during the day and kept the others in the run for a couple of weeks before letting them free-range together with supervision and plenty of corn about to keep them occupied. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the intros went and I am certain it was because we didn't rush things. To be honest, I fully expected intros to take a couple of months, and if we had to do the same again I wouldn't change my expectations - I just think we were really fortunate.

The best advice I can give is to take intros sloooooooowly and play it by ear. Personally I wouldn't put them all in the eglu at night from day 1.
