jsbates65
Hi all, I live in the US and am expecting my green Eglu to arrive in a couple of weeks. I am working with a breeder to get 2 Silkie pullets to live in my backyard. I am mainly getting Silkies as pets and because I love their exotic looks. Curious though, are Silkie eggs large enough to eat?
Martin B
Silky eggs aren't very big to be honest, only just larger than a bantams. They are still ok to eat! Good luck with your chickens!
Cinnamon
........but there are Silkies and Silkie Bantams, aren't there? I assume Silkies are bigger than Silkie Bantams, & will lay bigger eggs. My Silkie Bantam hasn't started laying yet, but I reckon her eggs will be small hen sized. She is bigger than my other 2 Bantams, but much smaller than my big hens
The Dogmother
Regular sized silkies lay eggs about 50g in weight, miniture silkies are really tiny and lay eggs about 37g. A friend breeds silkies so I have some info from her. BTW watch out for them being broody - they will sit on eggs at the drop of a hat and make excellent mothers. Aunty e
Kitty lays small, but perfectly boil-able eggs. For about a minute a year. The rest of the time, she's broody. Actually, that's a bit unfair, when she is in lay, she lays just as well as a hybrid, but only for a couple of months at a time.
