no1motherhen
Hello One of my 3 hens is laying eggs with lumpy calcium deposits on one end of the shell every day and the shells are quite thin compared to the other two. They have soluble and insoluble grit freely available, we add both to their pellets along with poultry spice and the hen who has the problem is the top hen, so it's not like she is being denied access to the food/grit. Any ideas why this is happening and what can be done to strengthen the shell? Thanks Claire
Daphne
Try adding cod liver oil to her food - calcium deposits/weak shell are a result of the hen being unable to absorb calcium properly and it presents as weak shells and/or with extra k"Ooops, word censored!"bly bits - usually at one end of the egg.
