Is it too cold for baby chicks?

Recommended Posts

Three days to go til our first ever lot of chicks hatch and they are tucked up cosily with the broody hen in an ark in the garden. However I am worried that it will be too cold for the chicks to be outside, once they hatch. Should I leave them or move them with mum indoors (or into the garage) for the first week or so? Also if I handle them will it put mum off them (like in the wild) or is that OK?

Many thanks

Our broody hen is coping well with her babies outside. She walks up to the feeder and drinker, calls the babies to her and they snuggle up underneath her just popping their heads out to eat and drink. It's quite sweet.

They are quite happy to wander about as well.

I've got two lots of chicks outside with their broody mums, no problem at all. They're a lot hardier than incubator hatched & artificially reared chicks and don't seem to feel the cold as much. Silly Nelly even sits out in the rain with one chick under each wing!

Thanks for replies. Gorgeous chicks Janty. I hope mine look like that. Sounds good to me as don't really fancy kitchen full of children and chickens if I can possibly help it. I suppose I will just have to see how they get on. don't like to disturb the broody hen either if I can help it.
