Cooking Pan Recommendations Please

Recommended Posts

I have a large, heavy Stellar wok that is gradually losing its non-stickness. I need to replace it.

I need something that is relatively large (can cook for 4 people although usually only used for 2), and has a lid, and is good non-stick. However it doesn't have to be a wok, it could be a lidded frying-pan/saute pan.

I wouldn't mind getting the same one I had before, but it is a bit heavy, and TBH was a bit expensive and didn't last much longer than the £7.99 special I had before from Ikea.

Anybody got any good pans of the right sort of type that you could recommend?

Our wok and cookware came from WOLL a German outfit who do solid aluminium cast non-stick pans and woks

I'd highly recommend them as one to look at.... had them now for over a year and they are still as good as new....

Bit pricey though so expect to take a bit of a deep breathe :)

Thank you, quinomlet. Those WOLL pans look superb. They cost pretty much the same as the one I bought before. To be fair, it has lasted about 5 years, but is now past its best. I like the idea of the detachable handle on the saute pan so you can pop it in the oven if you want to put on a topping and brown it.

Hmm....90 quid is a lot of money, but worth it if it lasts quite a long time.

5 years? Not one of my pans has been bought in the last 10 years, let alone 5.

I suspect, though, there's a running theme with my pans, and I suspect their longevity has everything to do with it. I don't do non-stick.

My wok is straightforward pressed steel, well seasoned, and is about 20 years old. I have a set of Le Creuset saucepans of various sizes, all just enamelled, and after 13 years' use, one or two are just a little bit stained. My frying pans (3 of them) are all hefty cast iron jobs, and once again are so well seasoned that nothing really sticks to them. Moreover, I can cut stuff up in them without them even suffering a scratch. There are plenty of other examples in my kitchen, but suffice to say that I'd never go back to non stick again.

If you don't like heavy, perhaps this isn't for you, but a quick trawl of t'interweb and I found this plain 10" pan for a tenner. The 15 year guarantee is a bit superfluous, I suspect, since anything cast iron will last indefinitely.

My pans are Stellar - but not non-stick - I've had them for over 20 years and they look as good as new. We also have a Le Creuset oval pan with lid which is really good - as the Major says. I had to give up using the Le Creuset frying pan as it was just too heavy for me to use now I have painful wrists.

Thank you everybody for your help. I decided in the end to go with the WOLL pan as it is sturdy but fairly light (I have intermittent arthritis in my hands, which is why weight is important). I had a Stellar wok last time and it only lasted about 5 years - now everything sticks to it. I'll let you all know how it goes.
