Ain't Nobody Here
She may have a softie on the way.
Foot-tapper506
One of my hens, bossy, didnt seem quite herself yesterday, kept standing still for short periods but I couldnt put my finger on what was wrong, although she was still wandering round with the other hens intermittently. This morning I found what I presume is a 'softee' in the nestbox, so I think it must be hers and why she was a bit out of sorts. She seemed OK when I left for work this morning. Not experienced this before - do I need to do anything? what causes them to lay softees? It was a proper egg with see through white and I could see the yolk quite clearly and it was all encased in the membrane, but just no shell at all. Thanks and I hope Tullulah is OK
cluckingmad
Could indeed be a softie on the way - my girls can go a bit off-colour for a day or so while one's working through their system, as soon as its been paid they perk right up Softies could be due to a lack of calcium in the diet, a young hen who's still getting into the swing of laying or could be a general problem with her egg-laying machinery - in very young birds its usually because an egg has passed through their system too quickly so hasn't had a chance for the shell to properly develop. Our ex-batts used to get them regularly and Millie (R.I.P) was always prone to them... I found making sure they had access to additional grit was helpful Hope the girls are all ok now x
