Chook diary from the North!!

Recommended Posts

I hope so thanks for the encouragement folks. No more soft eggs but I had a whopper yesterday I have just posted a pic in chooks from the north album. Bettys eggs so far have weighed 47g, 41g, 54g and yesterday she produced one at 67g that has to hurt!! I probably won't eat it till the weekend as I have no time to cook eggs in the morning during the week so I will have to wait to see if it is a double yolker. The first 2 were too small to fit in the egg rack that this 2 are sitting in.

They decided yesterday that the wet look was the one to go for as they were out in the pouring rain all day drowned rats had nothing on them in fact their tail feathers (Wilmas are growing back again) were still wet this morning. I think there must be some duck in their lineage

They are definitely both laying now :D I had an egg of each of them on saturday and as I was there I know who laid what  On sunday however I had an odd shelled egg and another soft one which I found in the droppings tray which must have been laid on Sunday as I had cleaned it all out on Saturday. I think the soft one was from Wilma and the odd shelled one Betty I am not going to give them as much 'junk food' I think I may be spoiling them too much and see if that helps I may stick to giving them veg in the afternoon and only give rice, pasta and bread occasionally I think they are filling up on carbs and not eating enough protein - hey I should write a book about the chicken version of the atkins diet

The monster egg I got last week was cooked on Saturday and it was a double yolker - Lesley did you have your even more monster egg yet :?: I have taken pics of it in the frying pan - sad I know  I have left my camera at home so hopefully I will post pics tomorrow. Me a chicken anorak - never

Hi Louise .. great to hear it was a double yolker ... its great when you break them open, and have the extra gold 8) . Ginger laid a soft "Jelly" egg a few weeks ago .. I did the baked and crushed shell thing, and so far so good. Pepper has been fine though, so it may just be an individual chickeny thing  .

Hi Sarah, I am giving them shell as well but over the weekend they hardly ate any pellets so I am being hard on them. They were not happy bunnies today. They seem to know when its the weekend and they get treats later when I clean them out etc but this morning they got nothing and when I was getting in the car what a racket even though I went into to town both days at the weekend in the car before they got treats they just seem to know I am out all day today  Hopefully it will make a difference. They are plenty big enough but I just feel they are becoming junk food addicts maybe I should threaten to get Jamie Oliver or Gillian McKeef in to sort their diet out :lol::lol:

That Gillian would have a fine time sorting our chickens out wouldn't she! She'd be in her element with all that poo to check :lol: The woman's obsessed with looking at poo

We haven't cracked the monster egg yet Louise - tomorrow for Lauren and Jake. (and I will take another photo - we're all as sad!)

No Mrs.W egg as yet today but Ellie has just laid and stuck her long toenails into Millie's and Tallulah's eggs

Clever things these chickens, definitely got it all worked out, how to get treats and our attention!

Glad you had the lovely double yolker Louise, shame about the softies but does seem to come & go with some of them.

My favourite treat to give them is apple pips (mean, aren't I?) but its fun hand feeding them. They love them, but 2 of my apple eaters have just gone back to college ro rest of us will be very carefully saving our 3 or 4 each day. Perhaps the others could post theirs......

I do boil up veg peelings...Esther reckons I spend longer preparing their meals than hers. Ouch.

Theirs probably looks /tastes better too some days (but not the smell) but I'm not overdoing the amount of potato to ensure plenty of layers mash is consumed.

Think thats a good idea to watch the carbs. Like the comments Louise :lol:

Well the hard line seems to be paying off I had another decent egg yesterday but it had been laid in the run so was covered in mud and poo I washed it and then noticed a crack so it must have been stepped on so I may not eat it after all I will see if anything got inside when I washed it after I crack it into a mug  But all of the pellets were gone and they were clucking for more so I gave them more pellets and a handful of spinach for being good :lol: They absolutley horsed down the spinach like it was thier birthday so they may get to know when they will be rewarded

:lol: I doubt it Louise - I think chickens have an attention span of all of two minutes

Ours are still on rations with some greens in the afternoon but grandchildren today will want to give them sweetcorn so they may get a little today. The egg shell quality does seem to be a bit better

Louise if you don't fancy eating the egg yourself why not scramble it for the girls because it is cooked they won't associate it with raw egg and start to eat them straight from the shell but it is a good source of protien and a shame to waste it................. :D

Thats a great idea Nicola. I didn't want to waste it as I have 4 to give away which only leaves me with 2 good ones this weekend and if I recycle this one maybe they will up production a bit

You are right about the attention span Lesley I am just deluding myself

The shell quality on the last 2 !egg! 's has been perfect so I have to be strict with myself. This week they have had a spoonful of sweetcorn and a handful of spinach leaves poor chooks

Mine are on restricted treats and the eggs have been very good so I will stick at it and ignore them shouting at me every time they see movement in the house...........Babs has taken to standing on the dust bath roof and crowing for all she is worth..........It is being cruel to be kind though.
