Chook diary from the North!!

Yes, we were thinking about that - a second eglu already. Especially as it's in Orpington :D

Somebody asked what price the seller was looking for and the reply was £250, daughter who's a bit of an ebay addict, said he shouldn't give that away, but if the bidding doesn't get near that it will probably get withdrawn befor the end of the auction. Doesn't seem right somehow, if people put something up for sale I think they should either put a reserve on it or be prepared to sell it for the highest bid. And the shade is apparently damaged.

I would like a second but I need to get my garden sorted first as I had a building knocked down last year and where it stood is now just hardcore and rubble so although the area is quite large most of it is no good for an eglu run so I will have to make do with one until such times as I have the garden done :(:(:( I won't be able to buy it on ebay though :!::!: I have someone at work who is an ebay addict and some of the things he buys are beyond belief in that I can't believe someone would be selling these things :shock::?:? I don't think a second hand eglu would go as high as £250?? Especially as the delivery is included when you buy them new I will wait and be proved wrong no doubt :oops:

Hmmmm .... BE VERY CAREFUL with e-bay. This seems legit, and the person should have put a reserve on the Eglu.

We have a rule of how much we want to pay ... then if outbid we WALK AWAY. Our last buy .. a pair of footy boots for Ben, was suspect in the beginning, as a person was bidding .. against themselves :!: . No other person put a bid in, and we reckon this was to push the price up. Also, the last 30mins before auction end, someone else started bidding, then backed out.

A wee bit like gambling really ..... know when to stop and don't get drawn in.

Don't talk about getting sucked in and paying over the odds! Been there, done that and bought the T-shirt! I had a really bad Ebay habit last year and it's taken me up until now to dare to log on again! I'm not bidding on anything again although it's a real adrenaline buzz when you do! I ended up paying much more than I wanted to for the things I had bid on because I wouldn't let go!!

Have fun, those that do dare!

 Kate and Lesley ... CONTROL YOURSELVES  . As a man would say ... needless spending  . Having said that we too, were glued when the last 30mins of the football boot saga started .... paid only £4.60 for really soft, leather (orange and black) Nike boots size 12 for Ben.

Oh ... just realised Graham has bought a joystick for the new computer for £46 :!: .. Typical men doing it behind your back .. he quoted a price of £10 max when I asked how much it would be  .

Hi Louise the Eglu sort of sold the last bid was for £212 but I asked if it did not reach £250 would she withdraw it from sale and she said yes so I stopped bidding. We think that the last bid was from a friend and that she did not sell in the end, all that excitment for nothing she will know to register a reserve price with ebay next time.............. :D:D .

Thanks Nicola, this whole ebay thing is a mystery to me my technophobe roots are showing again. Betty and Wilma got quite well spoiled last week I took pity on them on Friday as they were looking longingly at the fresh looking lawn outside the run so I bought them some watercress to snack on and then moved them on Saturday. One of my nerighbours caught me talking to them in that silly animal voice that just seems to happen :oops: never mind I am cultivating an image of the batty woman who lives with the cats (and the chickens) so it will only help. They took their first witnessed dust bath as well. I only got pics of thet on my phone as I didn't want to go and get the camera as it might of disturbed them but Betty was really enjoying it till Wilma stepped on her very very funny :!::!::P:P I have some more pics to upload to the album but it failed when I tried earlier so I will have another go later.

There are 3 new pics in the album but not of dust bathing as they are on my mobile phone and I don't know how to upload them to a PC. My phone isn't enabled to send picture messages either (technophobe moment) the new pics they are eating sultanas so I could get more close up shots but all I notice is how skanky their pen is with squished bananas :!::!::oops::oops:

Louise the new pics are great the chooks from the north are getting so big, I can't remember are they laying yet or are they still too young. The pen looks like my patio covered in bits of food the good thing is I hose it down at night.

I am going to pen the girls in soon because there is poo everywhere and the kids keep walking in it. Do the chooks use the branch in the run to sit on it looks a good idea, I might try it in the new pen........................ :D

Hi yes they are gorgeous they aren't laying yet I doubt it will be till Spring as they are only 4 months old yet. Yes they do use the branch after the bad weather I went hunting for a suitable candidate in the wood and after trying it and falling off they now do use it. They often hop onto it instead of ducking as they race up and down the pen quite amusing I have secured the ends with garden cable ties so it is quite study. The original idea was to enourage them to roost but they still sleep in the nest box :!::!: I was planning to free range them but I'm not sure as I do love my garden the front and side are nice its just the back thats a mess and I have a good lawn at the front I have spent 2 1/2 years getting moss free etc so they may have to stay penned up Ill see maybe a bigger pen along the lines of Eglu towers or something :?::?:

Thats what I intend to do Louise, the lawn is not too bad I still have grass but they have eaten all my strawberry plants and everything else that looked tasty. I would like some colour in the garden so a penned area it is and I have found a suitable branch to put in for them, I am also thinking about putting in a platform like Lesley so they have somewhere to shelter................... :D:D:D Pics will be in the gallery when I finally finish it, I will have to get a move on supposed to pick up new chicken on Friday.

 Hi Louise .. what we need to do to save our lawns  .

Someone else posted a topic .. I think title Building a run ... I have done this, well Graham, actually, and posted pics in the Gallery. Best to pick the spot, and make it permanent, that way EVERYONE can enjoy the garden.

Hear! Hear! Can't wait to get our run built. Never thought I'd say that but the garden really has taken a hammering. They don't eat many of the plants but it's so depressing looking out at a sea of mud with not a single blade of grass. I'm going to go out and take a picture to post in the gallery in a minute to show just how bad things have got in Sunny Stamford!

There - I've put 2 photos of the "Lawn" in the Kate's Mugshots album on page 3 of the gallery. Does anyone else's lawn look as bad as mine  ??

Kate that is bad your poor lawn, mine looks nothing like that I still have green grass they have scratched up the moss under the tree and that area looks a bit bald but I intend to reseed and I have been trying to kill the moss for years.

You win the prize so far for the best mud bath............. :D:D

Get building that run.

I will have a tawl through some of the pics I have from around the garden I know I have a nice one of the front lawn in the (rare) glorious sunshine I will try and find so you can see what I don't want them to wreck :!::!: I know I have one of the area that the chooks will eventually live in but it also has a bulldozer in it after I had the building that was on it knocked down. I do have alot to do to the back garden and it makes sense if I am going to give them a larger dedicated pen to do it this summer when I start sorting the mess out. The idea of a platform is a good one............you now have mw thinking how I can incorporate one of those into the eglu run in the meantime oh dear I can smell burning I shouldn't try thinking on a Tuesday :?:?:?

Pretty horrific, isn't it! I ought to try and find a "before" shot so you can see what it used to look like in the pre-chicken days! I'm sure once they're safely in their run and we re-seed, it will soon look good again!

I can't go along the platform route as much as I'd like to because we've got so many trees in the area we are planning to use as a run that we will find netting the top really difficult so we can't put anything in which they can jump up onto and escape into the neighbouring gardens - because they will given an opportunity, I know they will!

Good point Kate I will add that to the list, netting for the top I suppose you can just use the ordinary fruit netting for this ?

Mine would love to get into next doors they already stand on the garden table and look longingly, they don't seem to attempt to jump the privet hedge but they will go over the fence.............. :D

I Have stuck a couple more pics in you can see what I did to my back garden with a man and a buldozer so no grass is the least of my worries Kate :P:P Yes the neighbours gardens are a worry to me Nicola as well. There is a new estate up from me of very big very expensive new houses and some of them have immaculate gardens mine is sort of country cottage style but some of theirs are more sculptured so I could see an angry mob on the doorstep :!::!: I am lucky as I now have quite a large area to play with so a patio and some planted borders as well as sorting the grass and a chicken run are on the shopping list :D:D:D
