Sorry,but I didn't read this one - too much other stuff on I am afraid

 

The next book to read,during June is 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

I have been unable to find this book in my usual charity shop sources, so as yet I haven't read it either.

 

I am about half way through the current book and I am enjoying it a lot more than I though I would

I've read the book. I struggled to finish it if I'm honest, although I did. I could have done with the book being a lot shorter (its not a long book).

 

Once you've read about 50 odd pages about how differently the Hebridean people lived, in my opinion you didn't need the other 200 pages. I kept skimming the pages instead of reading then properly in the end I'm afraid.

im still reading this I keep getting distracted with other things

 

i am enjoying it though, i feel the woman involved is very naive (is that spelt right only the 4th attempt ) with what she was expecting, going from mid Manchester (i think - see - told you - distracted ) to somewhere as extreme and not expecting much change. but she does seem to be getting on with the locals

 

hmmmm, im off this week - must finish this book

 

(found out that my friend at work is reviewing next months book with her book club too )

Didn't quite get round to the lonely hills but June's book is by my bed ready to start after the school reports are written!!!

I agree with Ann. I read the first fifty pages and that gave me all I wanted to know so I couldn't be bothered to read the rest. It reminded me of the Miss Read books but I actually enjoyed those more.

Have just started the Potato Peel Society book and that is more my cup of tea so will probably have more to say about that later.

 

BTW I managed to get my books secondhand from Amazon. They were 1p each but I had to pay postage but I still got 3 books for around £8.

I shall recycle them at Oxfam or other.

I'm still reading this book too (up to page 192 Chapter 9 - The Dance).

 

Really loved it to start off with as it had some laugh out loud moments, Especially the bit where 'Miss Peckwitt' ran up a tree to escape from a cow and then pretended to be looking for nuts! But I agree with some of the previous postings, it was a bit too long. I will finish it soon as I hate leaving books unfinished.

 

OH would love to live on an isolated Hebridean croft, but sadly hates to read (unless it is a car magazine or manual) so I'll just have to tell him about the book.

 

This is a book I would never have stumbled across had it not been recommended on the forum, so thank you Snowy Howells for adding it to the book group list.

I read this years ago and loved it so put it on the list. On rereading it, it was a bit slower paced than I'd remembered! I had the whole set and now I've reread them all, her pace picks up a wee bit in the later books. Quite a few laugh out loud moments in them all, but not as fast paced as we are used to I think. There are also scattered references to chickens in later books - it especially made me laugh as she has an omletteers approach to her hens and the islanders often mocked her for it! In the next book she gets her own croft and there are some quite poignant insights into how modern life encroaches into the crofters lifestyle.

I enjoyed this as a nice gentle read - pleasant but not too demanding, with some amusing moments.
