Hope you are all okay.

Although I haven't had an injured hen, I did nurse one of my girls for a week on my kitchen floor when she was poorly with tumours. I searched out live mealworms and made a porridge with mash, sweetcorn and some wiggly worms - it was the only way I got her to eat.

(I did mix some sloppy mash and gave it to her in a syringe but I now know this can be dangerous as it can go down the wrong way - guess I was lucky! )

Good luck and fingers crossed she makes a full recovery - its good to hear there are understanding vets out there - I have recently moved as was really relieved to find that our local vet was hen-friendly!!

Well, it's been about 36 hours since the fox attack and Lily is doing great so far.

 

She has been up and about. This morning I took one of her friends in to see her for a couple of hours as I thought she was probably bored and lonely in the spare room on her own. This afternoon the weather was so nice I spent a few hours in the garden so had them out to FR (I made sure that Freda, the fox chaser-offer, was with us at all times) so I brought Lily out as well. She spent her time just sitting in the sun and following her mates about, but I thought it would be some good exercise rather than just sitting in the room all day. No-one is paying her wound any attention, not even her.

 

She didn't seem to have eaten or drunk today, so after her dose of baytril I managed to syringe some water into her, only a couple of ml's but she kept fighting me (which I took as a good sign) so it took about half an hour . I also managed to get her to eat a couple of handfuls of sweetcorn as well. What I thought was really sweet was that this fiesty chook, who doesn't like to be handled and would peck me at every opportunity, was sitting sweetly on my lap eating out of my hand. I hope that continues after she's better.

 

Its good to hear there are understanding vets out there

 

The vet was so good, Lily is the first chook he'd treated and seemed rather taken with her. When he gave me the info about not eating the eggs for a few weeks he also added 'and you WON'T be eating her, will you' (not that I would dream of doing such a thing) - it seemed like an instruction, not a question .

Oh wow!!! Well done Lily, you brave girl! And you too Nicola! It's funny, once you start to nurse them it really changes things - my Penny became a real sweetie - MY sweetie! I got REALLY attached to her She used to follow me around on the decking, hopping up and down the doorstep to follow me in and out of the house and knew the way back to "her" bedroom

 

I hope Lily carries on with her amazing recovery She deserves a few mealworms - you deserve a treat too, but guess you can think of something else! And so do your parents - they were fantastic! And your dog too... Together, you all saved her life :clap:

Thanks TF, she's had her mealworms, and corn, sweetcorn, boiled egg, grated cheese.......and I had some chocolate on monday night .

 

She is doing great. Freda (dog) and I may have got her away from the fox but the rest is all down to Lily. Though I think that the main reason she is so well is that she, by some miracle , didn't get a single wound to her body. The ONLY injury is her wing, though it could be nasty if the joint doesn't settle.

 

I'm sat right by the patio doors with Freda next to me watching them FR. Am going to clean the runs out in a mo. and then they will be back inside where they can be safe.

Such good news I know exactly how you feel after our attack this week and have joked with many fiends about my makeshift Intensive care set up in the lounge but now i feel so protective of her and like you hope she continues to be so friendly.

Thought you might like an update.

 

It's been 11 days since Lily was attacked and we went back to the vet's this morning for a check up. The vet was really pleased with her, he was worried that as is the wound was on the elbow joint everytime she flapped it would pull open again, but it has healed perfectly. The joint is still a little 'crunchy' but better than it was. He recons that the joint will calcify (spl?) and be a little stiff and arthritic.

 

She has been back out with the others since last Thursday, started laying again on Sat, and on Sunday I noticed she was jumping/flapping up to the perches. So she's had a really good recovery, well done Lily .
