Nicola O
Just had a fox attack on the girls whilst they were FRing. a HUGE fox ran across and grabbed Lily and ran off down the garden with her. I had JUST stepped out the shower (God, it means I wouldn't have heard a thing if I was still in there), tore down the stairs, grabbing dressing gown as I went, and screamed at the dog to get outside (problem was, as I screamed at her she thought she had done something wrong and ran away). Fortunately she followed me out and chased the fox away, thankfully letting go of Lily as her went. She doesn't seem too bad, there is a deep cut over the top of her wing, but I'm not taking any chances and we are going to the vet as soon as Mum & Dad get here to chook-sit. The others are of course back in the run, but the fox has come back in the garden twice and gone up to the runs and had a go at them again, and they are freaking out. I was meant to meet Mum & Dad up at their allotment but phoned to say I probably wouln't make it, explained why and they said they would come over. Fantastic parents, thank you !!! I am still shaking, bot Lily and I have had some rescue remedy and she is in the cat box covered with a towel and I will set off as soon as they get here. Sorry to ramble, but in four years of chooks this is the first time a fox has attacked them and I am still shaking like mad. Give Lily your best wishes and I'll let you know how she gets on when we get back. Nicola. Edited June 18, 2010 by Guest

scarlettohara
You've done the right thing going to straight to vet. Scarlett had some bruising and cuts after being attacked, took her to the vet that evening and she made a complete recovery after antibiotics and tlc, hope your chook is OK
chicken bark
What a terrible shock for you. So lucky that you were just getting out of the shower at the right time. I hope Lily is okay after her trip to the vets. At least you know the others are safe even if a bit shaken up. I hope you can relax a bit later when the adrenalin has stopped pumping. Nicola O
Well, were back............ The vets were great. We were 'triarged' (spl?) as soon as we arrived to make sure she wasn't at deaths door, and then only waited 1/2 hour to see the vet. Between us, we checked her over fully and the only injury is the one to the top of her wing (though she's lost a heck of a lot of feathers). This injury is not large, but it is like a 'slice' over the top edge of the wing and it is right down to the bone. It is also right on the joint so as well as blood there was a clear fluid coming out which the vet said was fluid from the joint cavity. She has stayed at the vets to have a couple of stitches put in. So I think she is going to be OK, and she's certainly been very lucky. Mum stayed to chook sit and Dad drove me to the vets (I do drive but Mum thought I was still too shaken up) - Parentals, what would we do without them? Thank you. NIcola. hippy chick
Good grief what a dreadful shock! Sounds like they had a very lucky escape. Bloody foxes why don't they leave the pets alone and go and get the wild animals. Thank heavens for parents I hope that Lily will be ok. Nicola O
Well, it would appear that we are not out of the woods yet....... Have just been to collect Lily. Had a good chat with the vet and he is worried that as the wound is right on the elbow joint, as she moves her wing she could keep opening it up again. They also found that the joint itself has been 'crushed' slightly. There are no bones broken but the joint was grinding as they moved it. Because of this the vet was concerned about it healing properly - and even mentioned amputation but only as a last resort, if it look like things are not healing and settling properly. He thinks the best we can hope for is that the joint heals stiff or 'fused'. She has Baytril that I have to give each evening. I'm a bit worried about that as she is not too good at being handled and tends to flap - which as the last thing I want her to do. She's currently in the spare bedroom, I've set up a box on it's side which she shuffled off into, muttering away to herself. So we still need to pray for a good outcome , thank you for your kind words earlier, I think deep down I knew this day could come, but I nevern realised how much panic and fear I would feel. Nicola. Nicola O
She's had a good night and was wandering around the room when I just popped in. She had a small amount of sweetcorn last night but does not want to eat this morning. I'm going shopping soon so I'll get her some cat food and tempt her with that. Perhaps I should bring one of her pals in for half an hour - maybe having competion for the food will make Lily eat some . Nicola
