Unsecure chicken perches

We are thinking of getting some new chickens since our remaining girl has decided to live with her new friend at my mums house.

 

We would like to get some Silkie's as part of our new flock - i am aware they are quite a bit smaller than a normal sized hen, would they be able to live together happily and safely?

Also should we have more than 1 silkie as they are smaller than the other breeds?

I would say have more than one. Bantams like to be in pairs or groups so they feel safer.

Size didn't seem to matter to my Silkie. She was 2nd from top in the pecking order , above all the bigger girls. I did wish I'd got her a friend of the same size though - she always seemed to be just outside of the group.She's with her chicks in a seperate coop at the moment, I might get her some bantam friends rather than re introduce her later.

I have one Silkie, but have other girls the same size as her (and Appenzeller and a Brahma Bantam), however, she tends to prefer her own company or one of the big girls company, my Appenzeller likes to hang out with my biggest chook, and my Brahma bantam is best mates with my Columbines. So conclusive proof that chickens don't mind what size their friends are.

 

The only words of wisdom I would share, is that when introducing smaller girls to larger girls, the introductions can take a bit longer and have to be done more carefully
