ibrunt
Over the past two weeks we have got two eggs with no shells, they are simple the spongy membrane, essentialy an egg filled 'bag'. This isn't regualr but has occurded twice, once after the hen (we don't know which one) had already laid an egg that same day. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? is it something in the diet? we feed layers pellets with mixed corn every afternoon Help appreciated thanks
ajayb
I've been having this too, recently, and my first thought was worming with Flubenvet (still happening); then tried adding some limestone flour to the feed; then a proprietary 'shell hardener' supplement from my local feed store - all to no avail. I should say that my chooks have oyster shell grit, layers' pellets and corn/wheat/ oats in the afternoons. Having read another post last week, I started adding a little cod liver oil to their feed and I think this may have 'cracked it', if you'll forgive the pun, as I now only have one hen laying less than perfect eggs (and they're just a little bit soft at the pointy end but full-shelled otherwise). Inexpensive and readily available stuff, so definitely worth a try.
taz1967
We have had a few soft eggs no off our Chickens, and didnt know who was doing them, but today We had Paxo stand in the run and lay a soft egg then stand still in the same spot not moving and lay a yolk on its own about 10mins later, which it then ate a few min after that. Not sure what to do. We feed a mix of layers pellets and mash with a lean towards the mash and mix in grit of various sizes. ANy suggestions????
