Ok so the pekins are in with the big girls!! they managed it a lot quicker than i expected, They had a seperate part blocked off in the WIR and the others could see them whilst out and about so they could get used to them.

Then i just let them out for 5 mins together amred with water gun! That was scary they all jumped them!! so back they went and i just kept doing that until they were no longer interested. Ezme The top chook still has a problem with them when its bed time or treat time, she doesnt like them up in bed before her she kicks them out till she has found her spot! But i think it will all settle down.

Im just so happy with them all and so nice to see them all out together foraging!

I have another 2 chooks coming end of july, so will have it all to look forward to again very soon.

Hi

 

glad its all gone well. i have just acquired 3 Minstrel types and compared to the chickens I have they are more flighty.

 

They are only a few weeks old but when I am around more will introduce them, they are in an eglu with 2 wild mallard ducklings at the moment, which is sort of holding up free ranging with the big girls.

 

But glad all is ok

My pekins are really docile compared to the big girls! still not keen for you to pick them up but once they let you they will happily sit on your arm! I couldnt be without them and so proud that they have managed to integrate so quickly!! :clap:

What big girls do you have? How many? I'd really like to integrate mine in the long run..... I'm happy to go as sllllloooooowwwwwwwwllllllyyyy as possible....

 

The ones in my signature

1x speckledy

1x white star

1x cream legbar

and sadly my silver lace wyandotte passed on.

 

Yeah patience is the key, you do hear some horror stories though!! i will be introdusing a blue lace wyandotte and a arucana bantam at the end of the month.

How do you find your white star and cream legbar. They are both on wish list. Do you keep them in a run or do they FR a lot? I've got a walk in run, so I'm letting my chooks FR less now as I'm worried about Mr Fox.

 

They both are fine in the WIR though i do have to admit the cream legbar is rather skittish around people so when i go in i wish there was a bit more room or i could let them out to FR whilst im in cleaning, she just has a panic attack and runs around crazy but when im not in she is fine and very calm, happy to scratch about or snuggle up with her sisters on a windy day like today.

I would not be without either of them the white star has the best character and brilliant white eggs and cream legbar is just gorgous and of cours lovely blue eggs.

hi guys, congrats on your new additions they are gorgeous!

we are planning on getting another 2 girls to add to our brood. our current faves at the moment are silkies and polish bantams, but your frizzle is irresistably cute! :angel:

stupid question tho (i'm a newbie chicken mama) - what does a 'pekin' actually refer to? and are they generally that small... or is it just because yours are young? we were looking at bantam varietys because we wanted a couple of 'littleuns' to add to our trio of ex-bats, but your pekins look adorable :) ...i was just wondering if you'd mind explaining about pekins (sorry if i'm making a complete fool of myself by asking this! :anxious: ) thanks x

Pekin Bantams are a true bantam breed meaning they have no larger counterpart. They are roughly 1/3 smaller than an average hybrid so are pretty small. They are really quite feisty and can stick up for themselves quite well. They are one of the only breeds I would consider mixing with Large fowl. Definitely don't go for Polish Bantams to mix with LF due to their limited vision and they really are tiny, way too risky.

ooo thanks for that tom! :wink: i'll only consider pekin bantams then! (is a silkie a pekin bantam.. or should i also avoid with LF?).

 

maybe one day we'll have seperate house for a group of polish bantams :think: i do think they are the most amazing looking birds 8) something else to bribe hubby about... :lol:

 

A silkie is a Large Fowl type of breed and so is Polish - however you can as Tom mentioned have bantam versions of these large Fowl breeds - basically the same chicken but smaller 1/3 of the size

But Pekins are not large fowl they already are bantams they are not a small version of Large Fowl they are what is called a true bantam.

And you can get frizzles in lots of different breeds as in frizzle pekin, frizzle silkie which is just the type of feathers they have and you can also get a true frizzle which is a breed in itself!

 

Hope that makes sense! Get some pekins though they are good! And mistrel laid her first egg yesterday and another today :clap:

As Grageomat stated you can get LF Polish and Silkies but as I said earlier they are still not as big as an average hybrid which is why I don't recommend introducing them with LF birds due to their bad sight.

 

This is very true Tom, i think that silkies and polish would cause problems with introductions in Lf Flocks and to be fair id probably always have Polish completely separate whether they are LF or Bantams purely because of the sight thing, very difficult for them to get out of a bullying situation if they cant see where to go!
