Time of egg laying

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Still very new to this, and what I'm going to ask is probably very common ... my everyday layer (except today!) has been getting later and later in the day, yesterday popping out her little egg at around 6 in the evening!!

Will she settle down to morning laying again??

Thanks one and all!

My girls are all over the place, I check for eggs a couple of times a day. They have the odd day off and some of the younger girls lay every other day. I have 2 young gingers and am not sure who lays which egg but one is a large egg and one is small. Its a mystery.

I believe they are a bit more "random", both in timing and colour/shape/size when they first start laying - they tend to settle into it more as they get older.

My lot are pretty settled - I have 2-3 who lay religiously before I get up (I'm sure it's just to they get to the food first!), and another 2 who lay around 8-9am. Then I have 2 others who routinely leave it until about lunchtime... clearly in NO hurry at all!

I'm not too bothered - I go to collect the eggs each evening, at about 9pm ish during the summer (it's when I go and shut them in), so as long as they're all there by then... none of them have to go on rations!!!

I have yet to wake up to an egg :( I tend to get one 'delivered' around 11am and then a second one normally appears around 4pm :eh: But the 4pm egg can be later if I am a neglectful 'mummy' and don't let the girls out as soon as I get back from work. I am still waiting for a 3 egg day :)

I've never woken up to an egg either, my girls are obviously like me and not 'morning people'. I think the earliest egg I have had is around 9am, but they are usually after 11am.

I found an egg laid by Daphne in the free-ranging area at 9.15 this evening...don't know why she laid it there when she could have laid it in one of the nestboxes inside the shed :eh:

My other girls usually start laying around 9am and then throughout the day sometimes until late afternoon

I did wake up (7am) to an egg that Mildred had laid from the top perch...over 5 feet high...couldn't believe it wasn't broken  Have also woken up to softies...very probably laid by Fifi :boohoo:

Thanks for all the replies ... we do seem to be settling down, Gingernut at least, to between 10 and 12noon

But I've got a supplementary now for all you more experienced ones - Annie Pepperpot still isn't in a routine or at all regular yet - both girls are still young, having only joined the garden three weeks ago - Gingernut has laid every day bar one, but Annie has been far more irregular, though she got us excited last week by laying on two consecutive days, but she also produced three softies, the first of which frightened the life out of me, but was reassured by the posts here. But after the last two softies, on each day she then behaved as if she were settling down to lay later in the morning, making lots of fuss but of course producing nothing.

Both girls are getting the same diet, so I'm guessing she's still got the hen equivalent of growing pains, and will eventaully settle down and the softies will become far less frequent - what do you reckon?
