BenHelen
Hello, I have been reading a lot on here about 'mash' for chickens. We feed our 4 bantams corn and pellets mixed up. Can anyone give me an idea (recipes) for some mash that our girls would like? Many thanks
alet_chicken
Hi BenHelen, and welcome to the forum! "Layer's mash" is the same stuff as layer's pellets, but in a loose (i.e. powdery) rather than pelleted form. Some members (including myself) like to add some water to pellets/mash, to create a porridgey substance, confusingly also called mash, which chickens love. They love it even more if we put something nice, e.g. corn, grapes, oats into the mix. There was a thread recently about recipes for this, but I can't find it now... Edit: Found it, it's not quite a thread of recipes for mash, but beak-watering anyway, so here goes:http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=65380
The Dogmother
While they love a wet mash, it's still important to remember that their diet should consist mainly of layers pellets or mash, with treats like corn and vegetables being left to the minority and only at the end of the day. If they don't get enough of the nutrients supplied by the layers feed, then their egg production will go down. Sorry to be a spoilsport
C&T
I always thought that as "West Mash" is made from their normal food with just water added, that it in effect doesn't count as a treat as it is their normal food? Admittedly, if you start adding all sorts into it like grapes, raisins, etc then they are quite definitely treats...
The Dogmother
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough.. so long as their feed (including wet mash) is predominantly of layers feed then it is OK. The OP seems to be feeding on a mix of pellets and corn, which is probably too much corn to be good for them - it is very fattening.
