pamelafilby
Please please help me, I am in a panic, but can leave it no longer. My chicken is in pain. I have to kill her. The problem is that I don't think that either my husband or I can do it. I have read about pulling it's neck and feet. I just don't think I can do this. Last night when we sat in the garden with her we really felt she was in pain. Please somebody just tell me what to do. I feel wretched. I am in France and the vet doesn't want to know, I took her to him before, and he evidently thought I was stupid, and didn't hesitate to tell me so. Egluntyne
Oh dear. I wouldn't do any of those things, it will only distress you and her further. I'd wait till the vet opens and ask for an emergency consultation. In the meantime, just keep her calm and quiet in a cardboard box.
Olly
I am so sorry to hear this. The French view things differently I know - if the vet really won't/can't help, then do you think one of your neighbours might know how to do the deed? If you are in a rural area they are probably used to it. I would try the vet again though.
pamelafilby
My vet is a complete no no. But my neighbour does kill things, but never nicely. The noise when he kills his chickens and rabbits is horrible. I just thought that if I gave her some really strong pain killers she might go to sleep and then she wouldn't know. Hasn't anyone on here ever killed a chicken without involving it's neck?
Egluntyne
Am sending you a pm.
jennydavies
Whereabouts are you in France ? we are in the Gironde and we have a very good friend that came and dispatched one of our girls that was very ill for us. We were both with her and it was very quick and over in seconds. He used to be a farmer back in Blighty and knew exactly what he was doing. Vet's over here laugh at the thought of treating a chicken. We may be able to help.
Chucky Mama
Hopefully Egluntyne's pm will help you. If your vet is a no no learning to humanely dispatch a chicken or finding someone local who can is a must.
Egluntyne
The chicken is now at rest.
jennydavies
I am glad you have been able to help Egluntyne. France is a vast country but we would have helped if we could. She can rest peacefully now.
lheurebleue
Sorry for your loss, pamelafilby. She is now resting in peace and pain free which is the most important thing.
Redwing
I'm glad that you managed to put the chook out of its misery This hopefully highlights to other chook keepers that having a plan for this sort of situation is very important, if you are unable to do the deed yourself then find out how to cull a chook humanely or have someone to go to for help(vet/farmer etc..)
