steveprice
I know have my light sussex 3 hens and 1 cockerel that are now 18 weeks old this week. The cockerel has now found his voice, hens have not yet started to lay. As i would like to use the above for breeding could anyone tell me when the cockerel would be the right age and i take it the hens will start to lay anytime now. As always thanks for all your help
Redwing
The cockerel with reach maturity at about 6 months old The hens will start laying soon yes but a lot of people dont use eggs from pullets for hatching as they are smaller and not so great shelled, chicks often hatch weaker if they hatch at all I personally do use pullet eggs for hatching but I wait until the females have been laying for at least a month or so and the eggs are then bigger and have better shells Its late in the year to hatch large fowl now, most large fowl breeders start hatching Jan/Feb and are well finished by now as birds hatched now will not get a chance to mature very well before winter hits
