(Im hatching under a broody) Little Feeder Little Drinker Chick Crumb Also at the moment my broody is sat on four eggs inside a coop like this.. http://bockingchickens.jarrodrday.com/zencart/images/chickencoop.jpg she is sat in the nesting box on straw (With sawdust under) and in the coop there is sawdust, is this Ok? sjp Posted July 1, 2010 Share Posted July 1, 2010 I changed from bliss a stray type bedding to sawdust bedding so the bedding was more even but I don't think I needed to. I'm finding the narrow lipped chick drinker a nightmare as the flow rate is terrible but as my lot are nearly 2 weeks old and as I've got a spare mushroom drinker I'm swopping over to that ( I asked on my thread yesturday about the drinker) I don't know if the chicks will cope with the ramp for a week or 2. I know mine got up on to the first step under the kitchen door this evening and thats about 6" high I let mine out into the run last Thursday they hatched on the 21/20/06 I could have let them out earlier but I'd got one egg left to hatch that turned out to be DIS oh one more thing chick sitting is more addictive than chicken sitting I've had mine FR the last 2 evening it's Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Redwing Posted July 2, 2010 Share Posted July 2, 2010 Woodshavings are ideal for chicks, sawdust however is dusty and they may eat it so is not a good choice Sawdust isnt that widely available so maybe you do mean woodshavings? The house isnt ideal because of the ramp but if you shut the pophole for the first week or so (providing there is enough ventilation) then they wont fall out while they are very small and there will be plenty of room inside for them for the first week Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was worried about the ramp and the angle that it sits at so i removed the one supplied and made a longer one with better steps. I also made some 'baby' sides for the ramp so they don't fall off!! meezers Posted July 2, 2010 Share Posted July 2, 2010 Re the ramp. Mine hatched in a coop raised off the ground. I used a bit of weld mesh to block off the pop hole from the inside, so they had plenty of ventilation, but couldn't fall out. I removed it when they were about 2 days old, they went up and down the ramp no problem, butgot confused at bedtime because Muppet would jump into the coop and the chicks couldn't work out that they had to use the ramp to get to the same place . I lifted them in for the first few days, then Muppet got the idea of actually walking up the ramp with them and they cottoned on in no time.
