you're a crafty lot

and so, please give me some knitting advice. When the kids were little I used to knit and sew clothes for them, but I was rubbish. They were the most oddly dressed children you are ever likely to meet. Now I would like to be good. I have a book called something like 'the 450 different stitches book' and thought that maybe, if I knitted squares of all these stitches I would become proficient at knitting.

BUT, I think I would die of boredom. If I try to knit jumpers they are tight on one side and baggy on the other and never square up when it comes to sewing them together so I give up.

If I persisted with my squares of different stitches idea, what could I use them for? If I had a focus I think I could stick with it. I love the act of knitting but I hate my end result.

I too find it difficult to knit. Mine starts off okay, but then, as I go along the row, the stitches gets tighter and tighter, until the squeaking starts and I can no longer get a knitting needle through the stitch :( I have solved this by learning to crochet and although still a beginner, I am currently 40 ish rows into a massive blanket for my bed (its about 240 stitches wide) :D It takes me about 30 minutes a row, so its taken a little while, but its worth it. :D

why dont you start with little things :D:D

something like a purse or bag, ive got some patterns where you use a leather belt as a strap (ok, its not hard, its a rectangle that has been felted, stitches are picked up around the top and then there is about 4 inches of ribbing :D ) but its quick enough to do and not get bored with it

egg cosies?

tea cosies

wine bottle cosies

(is there a bit of a cosies theme going on here  )

hope this helps

I agree with Cathy. Start with small straightforward projects such as cushion covers, baby blankets, belts, purses, even dishcloths. Choose bright colours to cheer yourself up as you knit.

Some types of needle are better than others apparently, and will give you a better flow, if you see what I mean. I can't remember which is best, certainly not plastic, nor the grey metal ones. Fortunately I don't have a problem and use the latter.
