capper
Got my gorgeous ex bats about month ago, everything has been going great until tonight I noticed Betty looked different , they had been free ranging in the garden with no problems it was only when I went to put them back in their run I noticed she was not interested in anything, standing still with her wings away from her body and looking like she could fall asleep on her feet. She went into run with a bit of coaxing but went straight into eglu - the others where having their last bit of food and drink. Has anyone got any ideas what could be wrong - they where all wormed last week and her droppings have always been a mixture of firm and very loose - the change was very sudden and now I know I will be worried all night. Any feedback would really be appreciated. Many thanks - Ange
ejaym39
Hi I wish I had some good advice for you, but not good with chicken illness. Having lost one of mine last night - I know how you feel. All I can suggest is you check her crop to see if it is too full or full of fluid and check her bottom to see if ok and not got an egg stuck. Have they been sprayed or treated for lice as that can knock them off balance. Check her feathers and if she has lice you'll see them, the lice seem to be more active at night. Good luck with her and I hope she feels better soon.
capper
Hi ejaym39 thank you for replying - I have dusted them all for red mite and lice and as Betty is ex-bat she is still missing feathers down her neck, breast and around her vent but everything looks clean and not swollen, I did feel around her crop but it didn't feel particularly hard. I will see how she is in the morning and only hope she comes running out of eglu first as she always does.
capper
Me again ejaym39 - I am so sorry I didn't ask about your girl you lost last night, it must have been really upsetting for you. Do you know what happened?
Jools
She could have a softie in the pipeline - that makes them feel pretty grim until it's passed. Hope it's nothing serious.
ejaym39
Hi, How's your lady doing today. These chickens are worse than children and I'm sure anyone without chickens will think we are all mad. My remaining ladies are all on anti biotics now to be safe as they have a few sniffles but they all look normal and are running around as usual. Maggie RIP, our poor old birld is now with the vets. I asked if they would put her in their wildlife bag for cremation as didn't want to put her out for the rubbish and the vet asked if she could take a look at her and see what happend - so we'll watch this space. I didn't know keeping these ladies would be so emotional at times. Best of luck with yours. EM
capper
Betty is absolutely brilliant - was dreading opening eglu door next morning but she was first out, looking for her food and water - she did lay the biggest egg I have ever seen later that morning but I still think she ate something she shouldn't in the garden which got stuck in her crop until it moved down. She will try and eat anything even grabbing a strip of kitchen paper if you are trying to wipe up anything off the floor! Thanks for replies its horrible when you are not sure what can be wrong or what you can do about it.
