Another Chick Problem!

Recommended Posts

Wow, today is an absolute shocker for me!

Been down to the shed where I have some chicks that are about 7-8 weeks. 1 of the chicks has gone completely downhill today and is doing something very strange.

It basically has it's head folded right over to one side so that the top of it's head is dragging on the floor. I noticed this this morning when I fed them but it didn't look so severe. It's now very severe and the chick was running around in circles looking quite distressed. It has now settled for the night (on it's own away from the others) still with it's bent neck/head.

Ever seen this? Is it something to worry about? Am I now bound to lose another chick! What a day!

Sounds like a neurological condition called Wry neck or Crook neck. Could be caused by head injury, abnormality, infection or vitamin deficiency.

You don't say what breed the chick is? Certain varieties are more prone to this.

Realistically you need to take it to a vet for advice, or euthanise it. Sorry. :(

It's an Orpington.

It appears to have made a bit of progress today but is still prone to a wonky neck!

I have a silkie that from very young had a complete bent neck like this. She is fine now although when she goes broody and tucks her head in to 'sleep' she then suffers with her upside down head for some time after waking up.

It's not something Orpingtons are prone too, though Silkies certainly are (which maye explain the other one).

There's a chance it could be an injury rather than neurological, so let's hope it keeps making a recovery. If not though, it probably does mean culling :(
