Cheryl
My Serama who is about 15 weeks old has started what can only be described as goosestepping, and collapsing with its wobbly legs splayed one in front and one behind.. she manages to get about but its painful to watch,,it came on suddenly and I'm wondering if its neurological or an injury. any ideas..? Mollie333
Hi Cheryl, Sorry to hear this. I would seperate her from any other birds asap. My Silkie bantam did this, does she happen to be doing anything elts? Sneezing? Breathing funny? she may have caught her leg or twisted her leg, or even a big of bruising. I'd take her to the vets to get her checked over if you could, if it was a disease you wouldn't want it spreading to your flock. Look up Mareks disease and Newcastles disease. Redwing
Mollie is right - do look up the effects of Mareks, one leg out front and one behind is a classic sign sadly
Cheryl
I have separated her... there is no diarrhoea.. seems healthy in fact.. just the legs shes drinking eating no diarrhoea.. its a real real pity...
Mollie333
Just like my pat. Have you looked at Newcastles disease? It might be that she has hurt her leg. I'd take her to the vets if you could.
Cheryl
No absolutely not Newcastles disease, and look how great she looks.. eating and drinking.. I'm going to call my vets tomorrow.. i hope its an injury but even then what do i do?... (also take note of the evil face top left, it's rather funny)... Redwing
I still would think its Mareks, the fact that she is happy enough but is laying down to eat indicates that too If its just an injury (fingers crossed) you can help by keeping her confined - a rabbit hutch or similar is ideal
Cheryl
Thanks Redwing , I think now I've Googled it you probably are right... ok now what?.. presuming it is that what to do now and what about all the other birds who have been with her for months?.. Oh dear.. I'm so worried now about them.......
Jools
It does sound and look like Mareks and she stands little chance of recovery - sorry Try not to worry about the rest of your flock as they may well have some natural immunity to it. She's lovely
Cheryl
Well..... she's in a dog crate on my patio on a table.. what do I do HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP !! My husband says we should do the 'right thing'... I'm mortified....
Redwing
It will be ok for a day or so, maybe even a few weeks but you do need to get it to a vet You may be lucky and find that its an injury so chin up x If the vet has to put her to sleep you could have a PM done to find out if it is Mareks but knowing that wont really help the rest of the flock, they will either have a resistance to it or they wont The good news is that only one has shown the signs
Cheryl
I have new 3 week old chicks indoors aswell.. and more hatching for the next few weeks... how can I protect them in case it is Mareks in fact assuming it is,, I really cant take risks can I?.. I understand I could pass it around the birds myself ..... urgh...
Mollie333
How is she going? Let me know what happens, i wish you all the best look.
Cheryl
sadly she didn't get ant better I had to make the decision, to do the worst, actually I had to go for a walk I couldn't bear the thought so my husband did the unmentionable.. still upsets me to think of it, but if I'm to breed chicks I have to be realistic..
