I have an empty coop and a hankering for some new chooks

Recommended Posts

So..... What could I get!

I have a list as long as my arm but need help in deciding.

I have this coop.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COCOON-CHICKEN-HEN-HOUSE-COOP-POULTRY-ARK-RUN-BRAND-NEW-/270585517321?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry&hash=item3f00275509

and have a 1.5mx1.5m extension that I have added to the front.

I'm fancying either some polands (but how big are these actually), a couple of silkies or some fancy laced wyandottes.

I look the look of all of these but I may also be after a different colour egg layer. All of my chickens so far lay either white or supermarket coloured eggs.

Suggestions please guys!

ooh lucky you! I have a similar coop that's spare. hehe.

It would be good for a couple of polands or mini silkies as it has the roof. They all lay white eggs though. Polands are lovely! Is it big enough for a couple of lavender araucanas? they are large fowl, but not as big as a warren for example... they are lighter and lay blue eggs. !eggblue!!eggblue!

I'm so taken with the look of the polands. I love the funky hair.

But then again I love the fluffy looks of the silkies, the crazy look of the frizzles, the posh look of the wyandottes. I also love the beared look of the faverolles ...... oh the list is endless!

haha, I know what you mean! My list of chicken (and duck) wants are so big I have ended up keeping my coop spare as I can't decide. What about a chamois poland frizzle. It covers polands and frizzles and it's feathers are laced or get a couple of different breeds. haha

I wouldn't get more than three in your coop (with the extension), unless they are free ranging. Just watch the top knot on Polands, they can be prone to mites and other nasties. I would go for a couple of pretty bantam Wyandottes - I am biased though! Good luck and post some pictures when you get them!

If you do want some Polands, the woman who hatched my three ( 2 frizzles and a splash) has some 10 week ones BUT you can't guarantee the sex at that age. She did a pretty good job with the 18 week old ones I had though- one cockerel who went back. PM me if you want the contact number - she is in March Cambridgeshire

Bear in mind there are 2 sizes of Polands. I have both and the bantams are tiny. I can't let them free range with my bigger Polands who aren't enormous ( slightly smaller than my ex-bats). I've never had trouble with mites in the hair do and they are pretty hardy- and lay loads of white eggs from about Feb to end of October.

I won't be putting anymore then 3 in that space. They're also going to have to be bantam varieties.

I have put a wanted ad on another forum requesting all that have been mentioned. there's so many options,, I'm sure somone will have something that I'm after.

Of course, if new chickens do materialise, you will all be the first to see! Even before hubby - hopefully I can slip them in without him noticing!

Well........ by two oclock yesterday afternoon I had two new girlies!

I've got a white wyandotte x silkie named fanny and a red silkie named Cilla. Both are currently refusing to leave the confines of the house. As soon as I open one hatch, they dart towards the other so photo's are impossible at the moment (unless you want to see their bottoms!)

This is my little polish Frizzle, worth getting one if you can, they are really full of life and soooo cute. Only slight worry, the lady we got her from was pretty sure it is a hen, but there was always the possibility it could be a boy, he/she has displayed laddish behaviour when let out recently with my pekin, there was a standing up straight showing who is boss and instead of the usual pecking, the frizz jumped up and started kicking!!!! ooops, its a watch and see. would be heartbreaking to have to take it back.
