Hiking/camping in the Lake District

Recommended Posts

Two of my sons and their friend have just set off to walk and camp in the Lake District. Now, this is the thing - last year they tackled the Coast to Coast walk but got distracted somewhere along the way, partly by the lakes and mountains, partly by the pubs. We now call it the Coast to a Little Further along Walk, and I often put on the Julia Bradbury programme to show them how a woman would tackle it.

I know it's the silly season up there now, but should you see three young men with rucksacks and maps relaxing outside a pub and looking like they shouldn't be, please feel free to tell them to get moving! :)

Tell them Mountain Rescue is rushed off their feet ( http://www.lamrt.org.uk/incidents ) and they better behave themselves :wink:

C2C is a great walk, did it four years ago and you don't need to train other than walking. Would love to do it again.

DH and I camped in Reeth (on the route) last weekend and he got that far away wistful look in his eye. He would love to backpack it .......... B&B for me though

I will, I promise. I'm the naggiest of nagging mothers anyway so any extra ammunition is welcome!

They've all done scouts, TA, things like that- they have maps, compasses, camelbaks, food, shelter, luminous jackets and I supervised their first aid kit so hopefully they won't be bothering your husband. (Hope I've got the right person). :)

I would love to do the coast to coast, but i really need to train for it :lol:

I don't want to be a bad influence, but: do it do it do it! I walked it a couple of years ago and it's one of the most enjoyable things I've done. I didn't really do any training for it other than walks at the weekend and whathaveyou, and if I can do it I reckon anyone can!

Maybe start a thread on get togethers?

It needs a lot of planning as there are ways of overnighting and alternative places to stop. Some people like a long day followed by a short and others like to keep the distances about the same. It ain't cheap if you want to B&B every night. Hubby costed it out last night at £600 including luggage transfer.

The best way, maybe, would be to agree a start and finish date(12 days is usual), meeting up as and when we run into eachother as well as in the evenings for those staying at the same places. It's surprising how often you run into the same people even if you are staying at different stops on the way.

Anyway hubby has done it three times and is full of lots of advice......sometimes too much perhaps :oops:

That seems a good idea and workable. My husband wants to do the walk with me but as it's the silly season in London too, probably can't get time off until October. I had a look at long range forecast for then and it looks warm. Do you think it's feasible then or too late in the year?

I want to check out campsites along the way as I fancy camping but also like facilities!

I think you may find that along the C2C route even the campsites let alone the B&Bs are booked solid for what remains of this season. I stayed in Reeth, on the route, last weekend and the chap was full as was all the accommodation in the village. Maybe the odd place but certainly not an Omlet meet

June is a good month as it's often dry and September, when the kids are back at school and the weather still ok.

The latter would be better for me as I will be busy with bees in the early summer.

My hubby and I are looking at autumn next year.

It certainly would give those of us who need to hone our fitness plenty of time to get into shape.

Just a thought :D

That sounds great, I didn't want to rush into it overly. I shall crack on with my strength training and get in some practice walks. I can do stretches of the South Downs way. Quite excited.

Would it be possible for a moderator to move this to the get togethers bit and delete the bit about my boys, that's irrelevant now.

Thank you if you can, if not I'll start another and we can keep up with progress and hopefully persuade some more people.

:D8)
