simon and his cat
Hi Now just waiting (excitedly - as are our cats!!) for delivery of our cube and trying to find some hens to live in it. So far we have found someone who has some Araucanas and Marans (around 8-9 months old) which I am keen to get but have just received a reply from someone else who has some Sussex pullets (about 3 months). I would really like to get all of them but am concerned (and as a complete beginner in looking after chickens) that I would need to introduce them to each other slowly over a few weeks (so needing another coop/run). I understand you need to do this when introducing new hens to an existing flock but what about new hens to new hens? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks (from my cat too)
Patricia W
If you get new ones at the same time, even from different sources, they are usually fine as there is no established pecking order. In your case, though you'll need to check if there is a size difference. It's not usually advisable to mix young ones with older ones if there is a huge difference in size. But you need to check. I've just got 2 x 12 week old Aracauna who are bigger than one of my adult Polands. She is being bullied by the others so I've put her in with the younger ones and the three of them are getting on fine. Hope that ramble helps! simon and his cat
Thanks That's very helpful. Now all I need to do is persuade my wife that we need more hens that we talked about initially Simon
