Anyone Broken A Toe?

Recommended Posts

I feel your pain. I broke my little toe in two places and dislocated it last year and was in a lot of pain for a long time. I was told to take a month off work!!! I didn't and regretted it as it then took much longer to heal.

The worst bit is that I have poor circulation in extremities and got frostbite because I couldn't even get socks on! I'm not sure what was more painful.

It's probably ok to do the dressings yourself - have you got follow-up at the fracture clinic? It sounds like you should.

Rest assured though it will get better, but you have to give it time. I had no idea how painful a little toe could be - i'll be a hell of a lot more careful around the coffee table now!!!!

Hi All

Yes I have a follow up at fracture clinic but not until 6 weeks time though. but I will go to minor injury moz and ask them to look at it. Cause 6 weeks before being seen is a long time to be honest. Since I am not a doc or nurse I would not know. I can only go by my own pain which is not so bad any more.

Its taped up with tape and that gauze stuff between what the emergency done at hospital. Have not changed myself as I am worried I may do more harm then good. Which is why going hospital moz to ask them.

I have never broken any bone before in my body in my life so its all new to me really. So when they said I had broken it was pretty angry with myself really, how could I be so stupid and clumsy. But I guess its my lesson cause I have knocked up my toe before on the door and it was black and blue then to. but wasnt broken then though.

At first when I first did it, I thought I had dislocated it really and not broken it, but the X-ray confirmed the break.

Plus I have another question???

Once my toe comes out into the light, how will it be at first? Once all the wrapping comes off? Cause when its supported I can walk on it, but I wonder what will happen once it all comes off? will I be able to walk on it straight away or will I need assistance with the crutch? Cause I am walking without the crutch now but its taped up of course?

Hi Ladywriter

Gauze and tape are the dressings of choice - there's not really a lot you can do for a toe. Like you it was the first bone I had ever broken and I could not believe the pain. I was physically sick every time something touched it at first let alone tried to walk! I told myself I was being a total wimp but people have told me since that their other breaks were easier (possibly as they were immobilised in plaster). The doctor at fracture clinic actually told me to go easier on myself (I didn't dare tell him i'd gone back to work, he thought I was 'resting' it).

Have you noticed your balance is a bit 'off' too? I never realised but the little toe is vital for that!

When my dressings came off I had a very white pathetic looking digit for a bit, but it got a better colour as time went on. I did need to walk with the crutch for quite a while after as well until I was confident I could do without it. I do still get the occasion twinge in it and it's more 'mobile' than it used to be but that's all now.

I hope it gets better soon. I am with you every 'step' (sorry!) of the way.

It's only in the past week or so that I've been able to walk normally because the swelling was so great under my foot I couldn't put it down properly. I'd been walking on the side of my foot which in turn threw everything else out of place, my hips & back were killing me. I know I should've used the crutches more but I'd probably damage myself further in my battle with them

I remember the physically sick feeling well. And if anybody gets too close to me I'm still in danger of crying! The pain in the bone is a horrible sensation, "Ooops, word censored!"ody should ever have to feel their bones, it's awful and not something I'd ever thought about. It's just my rotten luck that the only bones I've ever broken are ones that move with every movement we make and cannot be plastered. I broke my coccyx a few years ago and that hurt for months.

Ladywriter you should take the dressing off ASAP. My problems initially were caused by my toe being set in the wrong place, if you cannot see your toe you cannot see if it's where it should be and the longer you leave it the more trouble you'll have in the long run. If I hadn't started strapping it in a better position I doubt I'd ever wear shoes again!

Ouch Griffin and Ladywriter1968 that does sound painful.

Rest and elevation should help the healing process too, if you're able to :)

Back in 2005 I managed to break the base of my 5th metatarsal (that k"Ooops, word censored!"bly bone on the side of your foot is the base of your little toe) just by 'going over' on my foot! (Mind you, wasn't wearing very sensible shoes - it was those sandals with ribbons that tie around the ankles!!).

I couldn't stand up and hubbly literally had to carry me into A&E because I couldn't put it down :cry:

Thought they'd maybe send me away with a bandage and a few paracetamols, but oh no, had to wear a traditional non-weight-bearing cast for two weeks, then a moon-boot type cast for another six weeks!

They were saying what a fine example of an 'avulsion fracture' it was and when they found out I'm a nurse, they were all coming to have a look!

Some of you mention about feeling physically sick, oh I remember that too! This is the first time I'd ever broke anything (age 33) and I just felt so blooming useless! Fortunately hubbly was able to work from home the first week or so because I literally couldn't do anything for myself!

Anyways, Griffin and Ladywriter wishing you both a good recovery and I would say if you're concerned about anything at all, don't hesitate to return to your A&E, Fracture Clinic, Walk In Centre or GP :)
