Happy chickens!
Rosemary passed peacefully on Friday and tbh though she had seemed fine, I wasn't surprised. She had been ill earlier in the year and after some nasty pecking when she recovered (the others left her alone when she wasn't so well, which surprised me) she has been happily living as 'bottom' chicken, although no longer laying. I did check everyone else over and they all seemed fine. Rosemary had happily taken some corn from me the previous day and I was relatively content that her time had come. Today though I found Onion who was one of the top girls, still laying and feisty. I couldn't see anything wrong with her - or my others, so am concerned. They were wormed 4 weeks ago, all crops and combs seem fine and everyone is pecking around as normal. Maybe it's coincidence or is there anything else I should look for? Don't fancy taking her for a pm somehow. I introduced 5 new girls not long ago, but the intros had gone well and the girls were from a very reputable supplier and have all been really well (touch wood) since they arrived, so don't think it's that and am at a loss. Tutti Frutti
Oh no, I'm so sorry Do any of your new girls seem sneezy or under the weather and have you checked for red mite and lice? Just wondering if they brought anything extra with them...?
Happy chickens!
No sneezes, sniffles nor signs of red mite (weekly scrub out on Saturday) nor lice - new girls harder to check it has to be said, they don't really crouch for me yet! Inspection at dusk in the cube rather tricky to see small blighters. No signs on older girls though. Poop also seems normal.
Daphne
Keep a very close eye. Any more deaths and I would go straight for a PM. It could be coincidence but it could be something worse.
Plum
Sorry to hear it. Must be very worrying losing 2 but can understand you feeling anxious about a post mortem.
chickencam
How old were they both? It could just be bad luck. Fingers crossed that it was just coincidence.
Happy chickens!
Thanks for the sympathy. Touch wood all remaning girls seem fine. The ones who died were my ex-bats who I got in December 2008, I don't know how old that makes them, I suppose 2 1/2 to 3 years. The one who died on Friday definitely seemed like an older lady and though she had seemed well, her death wasn't a huge surprise, but the one who died on Tuesday was really perky. I'm putting some citricidal in the water anyway and keeping a close eye on them all - wish it was better chicken watching weather here.
