frizz
Hi, Has anyone experienced the following, I have a polish frizzel about 15 weeks old and a pekin 17 weeks old, they are best friends and have lived happily together for 6 weeks or so. Tonight, they seemed to have a little scuffle and since then the frizz has been limping and falling over, I have checked her over and the poorly foot it colder than the good one, is it possible she has been jumped on and hurt in some way? very worried about her
Krysia
I m sure someone with more advice will be along soon but I would see how she is in the morning. If its still cold and she isnt using it I would see a vet. I hope she is ok!
Mollie333
I'd separate them. Is it a all of a sudden injury from them fighting? Are you 100% sure its from them fighting? Limping and falling is a sign of Mareks, does it seem like she has a cold/ or her legs collapsing? Take her to visit a vet if you can. Pekins can be violent! Goodluck. Krysia
how is she today?
chickyhazel
If she is no better today take her to a vet, or if you don't want the vets bills monitor her very closely.
frizz
thank you everyone, she seems fine, managed to speak to the lady I got her from tonight and she said they were most likely climbing over each other to get warm and she has probably sprained her leg a bit. She is walking now with less of a limp and I am getting some antibiotics for her tomorrow just to be on the safe side. Phew, got a bit panicked for a while, silly how attached you get the feathery blighters.

chicken bark
Glad it doesn't seem to be anything serious. You are right you do get attached very quickly.

frizz
update - very she is in quarantine but eating and drinking less now, obviously suffering as she sits quietly, it is looking like we are going to have to say goodbye. I dont know how long to leave her in the hope that some healing will take place, if anyone has experience of this I would be very grateful for some advice. Whilst I dont want to lose her I also dont want to keep her alive to suffer, the poor little lamb.
Mercedes55
I'm so very sorry to hear about your chick being hurt. I don't have much experience of keeping hens, so sorry that I can't offer any advice, but I do hope she gets better.
frizz
Thank you. I am quite new to this myself so finding it a bit tough to deal with so early on, only had her a couple of months. Typically, she is only polish frizzle I have and is really sweet and unusual looking with a lovely personality, such a shame.
mostin
She may not be eating just because she is in pain. Do you have a vets near you that will see her or that sees parrots or or birds like that? I think it is metacam that is the pain killer they usually give to chickens. Also, make sure she is warm enough, as she will be loosing loads of energy if she is not eating and they have such high body temps they need to be kept warm. Honey in the water is excellent for getting some energy into an ill chicken, but if she is stopping drinking completely then I'm afraid it may be time to make some hard decisions . Please let us know how it's all going, huge hugs
scarlettohara
As Mostin said Metacam is an anti-inflammotory and not expensive but is prescription only. If she cannot feel pain she is more likely to eat and drink - hope you can help her
frizz
thank you, will try the honey in water today, and look at her again tomorrow, thismorning, she was still eating but not drinking. Will update you when I know more.
frizz
Hi ladies, thank you again for the honey and water tip, I got a medi syringe today and hand fed her some, she perked up and managed to get herself to her water bowl and drank more honey and water herself, I have also given her some tuna as I thought the protein might help, this was eaten with gusto, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that she stays strong enough to heal. If she doesnt improve, I will contact the vet.
mostin
That's good news. Hope she carries on taking in the honey and water and the food *crosses fingers*. Try and keep her warm, and limit her movement, not easy with a chicken I know , but good luck.
frizz
My vet doesnt do chickens!!! managed to speak to a poultry vet in York and he said it doesnt sound like a torn ligament as there would have been blood and to rest her for at least two weeks. Managed to find a vet nearer home that will see her, so hopefully on Friday will have an answer once and for all. fingers crossed.
mostin
Fingers crossed for you this place in York also does does chooks. I drive from Leeds to them with my chickens. You need to ask for an app with Nigel Langworthy. Don't let the receptionists fob you off if they say he doesn't do chooks, he loves seeing them, and has a big flock of Brahmas of his own http://www.merialvetsite.com/sites/towervets/staff.html
frizz
UPDATE VERY VERY sad, poor frizz - RIP, she had gone to the pearly perch!. Took her to the vet today and she had a fracture in the leg socket, the vet was really lovely and said that nothing could be done, even an operation would not help. At least she was loved and looked after to the end.

frizz
Thank you Mostin. Glad I found a vet a bit closer to home and a lovely one at that and thanks for your earlier advice. At least if anything happens to my other girls I have somewhere to take them now.
