Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

I have recently received a letter from my local council about the smell of chickens...

Someone put a complaint in about excessive odour.

Has anyone else had anything similar?

Complaints tend to be made about noise rather than smell but if you do a search on the forum for "complaint" you should find a few threads of interest.

 

Do you think there's a smell? Keeping their area dry goes a long way to keeping niffs down. I use Stalosan F which really helps to keep things clean and hygenic.

 

These complaints usually have to be followed up by the council/environmental health but mostly seem to be overruled.

How many chickens do you have and what sort of set up are they in? I'm sure there is plenty you could try to control the smell. I put garlic powder in their food and that really helps in reducing the poo smell.

 

I had a complaint about noise recently and I responed to the Council's letter telling them the details of my set up and that my other neighbours had no problems with the chickens. The officer at the Council was impressed that I had bothered to respond, so perhaps you could write a nice letter or email telling them what you can do to control the smell (if there is any). The complaint might be unjustified and if so invite the Council around to see.

Hi - in your other posts, the pictures look as though you might have bark chippings in the run. That could be one of the problems as they go manky after a while and stink. Try covering the run and use Aubiose,or Easibed or Hemcore, in the run and in the nest box. That will really help. Hope you work it all out.

A bit of garden lime will also help keep any pongs down.

I've got roughtly 30 birds in total, but 20 of those are small chicks, which are kept seperatly.

the 12 larger birds ( still not fully grown, and with 3 cockerels about to disapear.) are in a 6" x 6" x 6" cube on a concrete base with bark on the ground.

 

The chicks are kept in two other runs, also on concrete slabs and bark.

 

I dont smell anything, unless I open the coops up.

 

The complaint has come from two doors down, jusy wish that after living here for 10 years they would have the nerve to say something to my face...

As you say, it is a shame that they did not approach you directly. I've had 3 chickens on bark and it did smell a little bit on the odd occasion. I think that if you cover your run and use Auboise then you can just poo pick every day and there should be no smell. As others have said, Stalosan/lime is good to keep smells away and mix some garlic powder in with the food. It all helps. Have a look at this post viewtopic.php?f=4&t=34765#p537194. I had bark for a while and when we opened the bag it stunk to high heaven. So went over to hemp as advised on yes you got it Omlet My run doesnt pong unless there is a lot of poo and as I tend to rake it daily this doesnt happen. Two doors down - it would have to be a hell of a whiff to reach there can you ask next door (in between you and them) if they can smell anything
