Valkyrie
Was rudely awaken from my slumber just after midnight. Thought "Oh oh - chickens - must rush out to sort them out!" Then I realised it wasn't chickens. The distant "Tu whooooo" in answer to the "TWIT TWIT etc (and there were lots in succession) and I knew it was the tawny owls. Never have they been right by the blinking window before! Then I thought oh dear poor Tung's days are numbered (thats the little woodmouse that lives under our back door step - always living dangerously especially when the hens are in hot persuit and yet they've missed each time). As she was so - for want of a better word - talkative for the best part of 20 minutes, I assume she hadn't caught Tung. Of course she could have been calling to my OH - he can be quite a twit. Patricia W
Strange. I was rudely awaoken last night by OH sitting bolt upright saying " What's that strange noise- is it you?" Maybe it was your owls!! ( we're about 45 miles from you ...) Tricia
Happy chickens!
Hope you got back to sleep then!
Valkyrie
Yep, I did manage to get back to sleep eventually. But then I had a terrible dream a couple of hours later where I did hear the girls and some men were dismantling my cube and took all the chickens bar one orpie. Thankfully the cube was still fine and all the girls piled out for brekkies this morning! Phew! I wonder if the owls are pairing up? Or maybe they are doing hunting parties. We had a barn owl sitting at the end of the garden about 10 years ago during the day. He/she hung around the houses for quite some time. I have heard the screech that they make - again right by the window. Now that's scary! I think perhaps the pergola underneath our window makes a good place to sit and wait for the mouse to venture out. So perhaps you do indeed have your own owls Tricia? Or maybe your OH is answering the call.
Valkyrie
Update: Have just seen Tung so she survived the owl attack. I'm sure they'll know where to look in future and I think her days are numbered now.
Patricia W
We do have owls, but not usually near the house. Not sure what he heard! Tricia
The Dogmother
Their calls carry too - I'm about 300 yards from the park at the end of my road, and I can often hear the owls in there. I was woken up last night by the mating calls of some teenagers sitting outside on my front wall; it was 2am, they needed a room, so I opened the window right up and asked them to move on
