ubereglu
Well, I planted my runner bean seeds two weeks ago and they are now rather big. Except I've just read the seed packet and I shouldn't plant them out until mid-june. However they are taking over my windowsill, so I'm not very sure on what to do with them. Can you offer me some advice?
Puglet
Seen as you're in Somerset and predictions so far forecast a warmer than average spring/summer plant them out mid may if you can keep them indoors long enough. You could also try wrapping some fleece round them if a cold spell is forecast. I'm not sure what else to suggest. Hope that helps. Martin B
The seed packets were written before Global Warming. I should think they'd be fine if you planted them out under a cloche(?) now.
Lesley
I would think so as well. Plant them next to the canes they will be growing up and then place canes around the edges and wrap fleece around those - like a mini greenhouse.
Tina C
And you could always start a few more off to replace any that you do lose. (If you have any left I know you have been seed swapping!) I have the same problem with my tomatoes - we have 9 plants and tomatoes popping out daily but if I pot them on I will have no room left on my windowsills, and its a bit early for them to go outside. I do agree with what Martin and Lesley have said, global warning and all that, but I would hate to lose all those fruits (we have at least 5 on each plant and one is almost full-size already (they are little toms). ubereglu
Well, I've decided I will plant them out tomorrow in the morning, as they really are big, about 9 inches tall already!
Cinnamon
I am planting my French Beans out over the weekend & just popping the big round tub with a wigwam they will cimb on into a sheltered spot for a month or so (behind the greenhouse!) Fingers crossed we are done for frost this season - or is that just wishful thinking?
ali-s
I planted my Runner Beans far too early got carried away when the weather was warm The plants are romping away in the greenhouse and I am tempted to plant them out but no doubt we will get more frost and minus temps for a few weeks yet. I must resist
SarahJo
My beans have been out for a week ... though I do have some fleece to roll down over them, pegged to the netting, if need be. I have also planted out sweet peas and corn cobs, so hope there is no more frost to come .
ubereglu
Your sweet peas should survive Sarahjo. As they can been planted out at this time of year anyway. Yesterday I planted out all but 2 of my runner beans and so far they have lasted the night!
snowcloud
I agree that putting them out now is best - if they get too large inside it will be no good when they do get outside as they will be used to being inside. They need toughening up! I planted mine outside direct in the ground (in Dorset) and they are already through too. If there is a cold snap then fleece or a cloche will help them - but get them outside asap! Good luck...
ubereglu
Well they seem to be doing well outside and have started to climb the poles! There were two that weren't quite big enough to be put outside yet, so they're still in the house. Some of the leaves on a few of them have been nibbled, but they should live! SarahJo
3 of my beans were "eaten" at the tips by snails, who cunningly used a pipe, to slide along to the bean shoots, hence avoiding any slug/snail traps/deterrants. BUT .... ... the beans have regenerated from the seed, that is obviously still in the ground, as I just left the stalks in the ground. I also have some new beans, to replace the others which were attacked ... but isn't nature clever.
ubereglu
That's clever! My sweet peas also did that too!
Chicken Licken
I planted my beans early out on the allottment and they are doing fine. I have some extras in the mini greenhouse just in case - but they are looking good so far!!
