A Cube or a Classic? Someone slap me please

Recommended Posts

We are going to get 3-4 chooks to start off with. I have no idea how many we end up with but I doubt it will be more than six.

We don't really have the ability to build a walk in run, so if free-ranging doesn't work (due to foxes or garden being wrecked), they will have to be in the run pretty much all the time.

I'm not sure I feel comfortable with them in the Classic run, and if I start adding loads of extensions, I may end up wishing I'd bought the Cube. However, at the moment, the price difference (of the basics) is almost double.

Can someone help me decide please?

I'm now further confused by hearing that there have been fox attacks through the Eglu runs...

If it is a choice between the eglu and the cube I'd go for the cube.

If you are keeping them in the run all the time remember you'll need a minimum of 1m sq per hen so that is a lot of extensions.

Perhaps a better option would be to get some electric netting. You could keep 6 hens in a 25m length of netting. You can then move this round the garden when each section gets wrecked but it would give you chance to 'repair' each section. Electric fencing is expensive initially but it does work and is often cheaper than a WIR.

Thanks Chicken Bark.

I've just ordered the Cube. And yes, what you suggested is exactly what I'd also thought of doing next.

I'm going to see how it goes with free ranging (which is my real preference). If it just doesn't work out then netting and electric fencing is the next step.
