laser hair removal

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just wondering if any one has gone down the laser hair removal line. I am swimming lots and keeping everything neat and tidy is getting a real pain. It is expensive about £70 a go and apparently you need about 6 treatments, but if it means I don't have to resort to swimming shorts or it means I don't have to get the razor / creams out all the time then that would be fantastic.

I would like to know what its like, how successful and what side effects etc.

If any one can help then that would be great.

Thanks

My daughters friend has had laser hair removal and says it's really good but very expensive.

I bought the Boots smooth skin IPL hair removal system, I've been using it for about 8 weeks on my armpits and bikini line, I haven't had the miracle results other people have ( if you read the reviews on the website) but there is a definite reduction in hairgrowth so I shall keep using it and they do state that the best results are achieved after 6-12 weekly treatments.

It was £50 off when I bought it and cost £274.99 but I decided to buy it as I can use it at my leisure and will treat my legs over winter & hopefully be hairfree next summer for a lot less than the cost of laser treatment. When I checked out the cost of laser treatment locally, buying the Boots machine cost less than a course of hair removal for one area!

And you can always sell it on when you're hair-free!

I had it done on my chin some years ago, as this has always been a problem area for me. It's expensive, I think it was about £70 a 10 min session then and it had to be done around every 6 weeks (if I remember rightly) to catch the hairs at different stages in their growth cycle. I had a lot more than 6 treatments! You do start to see a difference then, but as they all grow at different rates hairs will still appear. It did work and it was great for a while, but I stopped after working out I'd spent about £1500 on my lip and chin area.

However in my case, after about 6 months they started to regrow, so I'm back to square one and back to plucking them out with a tweezers. This is a bind, but I'm not prepared to spend that sort of money again on a short term fix.

My sister had her underarms treated, at great expense, until she was hair free. A year down the line she's shaving her underarms! She spent a fortune and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. She's dark haired and has a medium skin tone and apparently was a very good candidate for this procedure but while it worked initially, if the treatments aren't maintained, it appears to be back to square one. Could be it works better for some rather than others.

I bought one of those when they first came out.

I used it for around 10 weeks & the bulb blew - it costs £50 for a new one.

Luckily they swapped the entire unit for a new one for me,as the bulb shouldn't have gone that soon.

The second unit then started to play up too, so I persevered, then got a full refund.

Not impressed!

It didn't really work very well either, & all my leg hair grew back.

After reading this thread, I asked a beauty therapist friend about laser hair removal; she said that the home units really aren't 'powerful' enough to kill off the hair follicle - regulations don't allow lasers that strong to be used outside trained and licensed premises.

So the upshot seems to be, don't bother with the cheap, shop bought ones; either spend yer dosh on salon treatment or revert to the old waxing/shaving/plucking routine.

I had it done a couple of years ago and I'm eggstatic with the results. I went to a laser hair removal clinic rather than a beauty salon and the treatement was carried out by a fully qualified doctor. The other practitioners were former nurses and while I was nervous about laser treatment full stop, they soon put my mind at rest. I had six treatments about six weeks apart but was advised that I'd need to go back occasionally for any new growth to be zapped - nothing yet though.

I booked a course of treatments which meant that the final one was free and I think it was £300 in all.

It only works on dark hair - the darker the better. The hair needs to be short, so you need to shave about 7-10 days beforehand. You can't allow the area to be exposed to the sun for at least a month before the first treatment and after the last (sun block is okay though). There are some medications you can't take for the same period, like St Johns Wort, and also you can't have ibuprofen a few days before or after each session. I'm sure there's more but I can't remember right now.

So my experience is that it's expensive initially but I haven't needed to have that area waxed since, so it will pay for itself. You have to be absolutely sure you can persevere because it's a commitment and it hurts like hell at first until you learn to block it out. However, I'm delighted with the results and wouldn't hesitate to have other areas treated if I could afford it. :)

i've had laser hair removal, i've had 7 sessions at a hospital skin clinic over the past 18 months. i booked it on a special offer and paid £225 (register on line with skin, and they periodically send you money off treatment vouchers). there is nothing growing back ..... yet, but i was told to have a maintainance treament approx every 6 months or so (cost £70), however its been over 6 months and i dont need one yet. when you work it out it amounts to £2.70 per week for 6 months thereafter so not that bad - its just the initial outlay that makes it appear expensive.
