Daphne
I hardly use my 20 year old drier except at this time of year - too cold/wet to dry outdoors and no heating in the house to help. I've just had a houseful of guests and a washing/drying disaster as the old Bosch has really given up the ghost....had to send my bro back to my Mum with a car full of wet washing en route to Australia. Anyway, OH is keen on a washer/dryer, OH's Mum says she's heard they ruin clothes, and I'm completely ignorant about the whole thing. Do we need to put it on an outside wall (which would be difficult)? Are they a good idea or would I be better just getting a new dryer which would have to live in a shed like my old one? HappyhenSG
Hi I used to have a washer/dryer and no, it doesnt need to be on an outside wall. I left it behind when I sold my house and moved in with my (now) hubby. I found it worked ok, but if you wash things that can be dried together with things that cant, its a bit of a faff having to rifle through the wet stuff to remove them. Unless space is an option I would personally go for separate washer and dryer. If you're like me, they're often both on together (2 young kids and loads of washing ) so it makes sense for us. Plus if one goes wrong you still have the other. Hope this helps.
Charlottechicken
I wouldn't buy a washer dryer either. A friend has had two where the dryer bit gave up. Also, I believe the dryer capacity is half that of the washer, so you should take half the washing out anyway before you dry it. I'd go for a replacement dryer, much cheaper! Olly
Just as charlottechicken says, I had one years ago and you'd have to take half the wet washing out while you dried the other half ... and meanwhile you can't use the washing machine! If you're really short of space it might be an option, and perhaps they've improved as I'm talking of one about 20 years ago, but it's never made me want to get another one. Aunty e
New ones are much better, the water drains into the washing machine drain, and if you're prepared to spend the money, you can get one where the dryer load is the same as the washing load BUT given how cheap tumble dryers are, I would just buy a new dryer. We have ours out in the garage, and it's perfectly happy out there. It's a condenser.
The Dogmother
Get a Zanussi! I've had a couple of other brands, but this one (Condenser) is just brilliant and cheap to run too.
sari
I had my Mom's ancient one, and it gave up when my daughter was four weeks old....we were a little " shy" of funds so bough the cheapest one we could, a British Knight one......never heard of them, and its still going strong 9 years later. I have a Candy Geo I think, its an 8kg drum washer, and its fab. I've had 2 Candy washers in 16 years..my [poor mom has had about 7 hotpoints in 20 years... Oh yeah....White Knight.....British Knights were amazing bad boy 90's trainers....duh! Edited September 10, 2010 by Guest
Charlottechicken
I'm on my second White Knight, this time a condenser, and I find them cheap to run. I have very low electric bills
