LisaP
My lovely DD is taking this exam tomorrow (UK Clinical Aptitude Test). She wants to become a doctor and has to take (and pass ) this exam as part of her University application. She is an intelligent girl who works very hard and it shows in her results of five GCSE Astar and four A's and she just got four A grades at AS Level. However this test is really freaking her out, to the point that she has a more or less permanent headache. I will be taking her to Reading tomorrow to do it and so will be able to give moral support but I was just wondering if any of you might have any practical knowledge/advice of this test, something I am sadly lacking in. Lewis
I was going to have to do BMAT (for Vet school) ... a couple of people did this and LNAT when we were applying last year too. May be a bit late, but there are a few good books and websites that people were looking at, at the time. We did a BMAT at 'VetSim' and I got in the top quartile of the results, so she should be fine! Its timed and know some people didn't have time to answer them all, just read the questions carefully and don't jump for the obvious answer, think about them first
LisaP
Thank you Lewis. She has been doing online practice papers and reading up on it all and I will pass on your tip about thinking it through. I think she's more anxious because unlike normal exams there haven't been any lessons/revision leading up to it. Lisa P
ubereglu
Good Luck. I know a few people who've taken it and a lot of them said it was the hardest thing they'd had to do...I'm not a help am I??? Tell her to take her time though and she'll do ok. chickencam
My ED has just done this I think or maybe it was a practice for next year. She is in yr 12 and said that it was really hard on time. YD did a similar thing in yr 7 on the same day, which ED remembers doing too. UKCAT is specifically for students who want to study Medicine at Uni. It can only be taken in certain locations and costs approx £60. Good Luck to anyone who is going to take it though. H My first thought when I read the original post was ahh my ED sat this in year 7 when she started at her new secondary school. But its not the same is it CAT tests are Cognitive Aptitude Tests and are used to base the level of learning throughout the school years so they can tell if pupils are slacking or working at expected levels. bluekarin
Thank you all - nerve wracking day but it's over now and here are her scores - Verbal............................740 Quantitative.....................700 Abstract..........................640 Decision Analysis................590 Now can anyone tell us if these scores are good or how they are actually used by the prospective universities, as we don't have a clue although we think they take an average Lisa P Well, and I don't know about this for sure, but according to the St Andrews School of Medicine Use of UKCAT at St Andrews At St Andrews we use the UKCAT in two ways; firstly we set a cut off for the overall UKCAT score and applicants obtaining a score below that will not be considered for interview or a medical place. A cut off score for each admissions cycle will be decided upon once all applications have been received and it will be based on the national average which, in the past, has been in the range of 2400 - 2500. It is likely that applicants for 2011 entry with a score below 2457 will not be considered. Obtaining an overall score of 2457 will not guarantee an interview or entry. Depending on the number of applications and the range of UKCAT scores received in November, the Medical School may not be in a position to consider further all applicants who obtained 2457 in their UKCAT score. Secondly, at St Andrews the UKCAT score will be used as part of an applicant’s overall ranking following interview. The UKCAT score will be worth 15% of an overall admissions score. That percentage will be generated by a points system whereby applicant scores will be ranked and divided into bandings with points allocated per banding. But I guess this will differ with all the different unis. But to me she did really well
Lewis
Sounds like a great score to me I think for a few of my friends they just had a single score, out of 700/800? which mattered the most.
Bramble
That sounds promising, scores look impressive, guess its just "wait and see" now (the hardest part?)? Good luck
Leicester_H
Hi I have nothing to do with admissions but I work in Leicester Medical School. Some info is here http://www.le.ac.uk/sm/le/admissnews.html and might be of interest Please note we do NOT use total or average scores.Your UKCAT score is taken into consideration with your academic achievement, personal statement and reference. It is unlikely that an otherwise strong candidate would be rejected simply on the basis of the UKCAT score.
LisaP
Spooky, Leicester is actually her first choice However she is not sure of her chances of getting into Leicester, as they take the lowest score and as hers is nearly 200 less than her highest, it considerably lowers the points it would give her We will just have to wait and see, as not all the Uni's use the UKCat result in the same way. She input her choices into the UCAS site yesterday - Leicester, Brighton & Sussex, Cardiff, Southampton and has just written her personal statement. We still have another year to go of course, with A Level modules in January and finals next May/June. Funny because ES is also doing his A Levels but still isn't sure what he wants to do or which Uni to go to and he is so laid back about it he's almost horizontal Between the 2 of them I suppose there's a happy balance And then we've still got 2 YS, aged 13 and 11, to do all this again in a few years - think that'll be another thread, another day............... Thank you all for your advice and good wishes and best wishes to everyone else in the same boat. Lisa P
Leicester_H
Spooky, Leicester is actually her first choice Everything is, and has to be seen to be, absolutely fair and there's load of info on the web site, but if there are any 'silly' questions you want to ask me, I'd be happy to try to answer. If she gets an interview, will you come with her ? Depending on work, we could maybe meet up for a coffee and chicken chat ? Anyway, good luck, H
