kinsk
In feb we got 3 ex batts, lost one due to a prolapse a few months ago, so left with two. One of them, little hen, hasn't been looking so clever over the last few weeks, she went really downhill, then picked up, have noticed the last few morning she doesn't get out of bed, or gets out for a bit and then goes back. Neither of them had laid for 5 days but last night big hen laid an egg in the run (she has never done this) a friend suggested little hen might have gone broody and not let big hen onto the nesting bos to lay her egg. This morning though little hen wasn't looking very well, her cone was rather pale and she was just quiet. my question really is at some point one of them is going to go, which leaves me with one, not good. There are pleanty of places I could get new hens from but would rather get a couple more ex batts, my worry is that it could take a few weeks during which I'd have a lonesome hen
dancing cloud
It's hard to say if anything is wrong with little hen and you may want to consider a trip to the vet or a word with the BHWT Careline. My Lola, also adopted in Feb went broody a few weeks ago, but was not pale and was very far from quiet. If you are able and willing to adopt a couple more ex-batts, perhaps have a word with your co-ordinator to see if they can bump you up the list in view of your circumstances. There's also a possibility they may have some former poorlies that are ready for a new home (though these are fairly rare). Fingers crossed for little hen and please let us know how you get on. Pikey
I had exactly the same with my Season.....she just kept taking herself off to bed and if sunny jumping on my lap to go to sleep (not that I minded really!).....she also wasn't eating. I found that she needed worming........as i did loads of dead worms came out in her poo....I think it was all that extra free ranging over the summer. After a couple of days she picked up. Little hen could be broody........usually they are very unhappy about being moved from the nest or being disturbed (very vocal about this and like to peck??) and they often pull out feathers. She may also have a softy on the way?? I would think a few weeks with one on their own would be ok. Hope shes better soon.
kinsk
Thanks. They were wormed 8 weeks ago, but she wasn't really eating much at the time so may not have had a 'full dose' will look into it but does anyone know off hand if worming them again so soon would do any harm? would at least rule that out. Egluntyne
You can worm again with Flubenvet after 3 weeks.
sparkysmum
How is little hen today?
staceychristie
Sorry to hear of your probs. You are right to be concerned about a lonesome hen. As dancing cloud said that your BHWT may have a few better hens (just in case). 3 or 4 are always happier together anyway if you can accommodate them. If they have a softie, they do move about, but look so sorry for themselves, and have droopy wings. Is she drinking ok still? Stacey
kinsk
She's picked up a bit, fingers crossed, her cone isn't as pale, but still not right. Have started them on flubenvet again and put some of the red tonic stuff in their water which usually perks them up a bit. She's definitely still lethargic though.
