Nutmeg isn't well- any ideas what could be wrong?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I noticed yesterday that Nutmeg wasn't looking herself, she was walking slowly and generally looking lethargic. Unfortunately yesterday I was away, so couldn't really monitor her behaviour. She seemed Ok, other than the slow movement. This morning she wasn't too good, I monitored her behaviour all morning, but she didn't do too much at all, just stood around looking confused. I went to clean the girls out this afternoon and since it was windy out, I put Nutmeg in the nesting box so I could keep an eye on her. I figured that since she hasn't laid for ages, that maybe there was an egg on the way, and mixed in with the recent cold weather, she wasn't feeling too good.

Tea time came, and she didn't want to eat (which has set alarm bells ringing- she loves her food). She didn't go running off towards the food like the others did, instead she just stood there in a daze.

I picked up some peas and sweetcorn and held them out to her, but instead of going to eat them, she just pecked around my hand, like she was trying to get it, but couldn't see properly. Only then did it occurred to me that her sight seems to be going, I put her on top of the cube (so she could be away from the others) and attempted to spoon feed her some porridge, but she literally was pecking everywhere but the spoon! Even after I took the spoon away, she was pecking the air like it was still there :? Eventually I managed to feed her a tomato, some porridge and a bit of water, which took all of half an hour. She is also barely walking, and when she does she holds her wings slightly away from her body. I wonder if she has had some sort of stroke? It also seems odd that she doesn't seem to recognise anything around the run, such as where the water is, or even any of the girls.

She also did a really odd poo before, *don't read on if you're squeamish!* it was like slimy clear liquid (like an egg white) with a piece of red 'stuff' like mince or something. I have no idea what could have caused that, they have only eaten their usual pellets and some spinach and sweetcorn.

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with her? If there is no improvement by tomorrow, then she will be straight to the vets. I'm just not sure what to do with her right now? Should I keep her in with the other girls or separate her? I just don't want them picking on her or anything.

Any advice please?

We've also got a poorly girl too Chicken04

She didn't seem herself and her comb went very pale pink. She was also puffing her feathers out and seemed very lethargic. I followed the advice from Omlet, who have been very good but she still didn't seem right, so I took her to the vet yesterday and she's got a fever and a bacterial infection.

I've got her 'isolated' and have been giving her Baytril antiboitics. Fingers and everything crossed :)

Sending loads of positive vibes for Nutmeg and hoping she'll pull through xxx

Hi all, apologies for the late reply! Things have been a little hectic here!

Anyway, Nutmeg is still with us. We got her to a vet and he had a good look at her, he seemed to think that she has an infection in one of her ovaries. He had a good 'feel' around and he could feel a lot of access gas and fluid.

I was worried that with a diagnosis like that, that she would just be put to sleep, however the vet seemed to think that there was a fair chance of her pulling through. He said that she isn't in any pain, but perhaps a bit of discomfort, but the anti biotic should clear the infection and take the discomfort away.

I mentioned her eyesight and how she didn't have much co-ordination at all, but he explained that the infection had probably caused her to feel extremely dizzy and woozy, hence not being able to reach for her food properly.

He also said to make sure she is kept away from the other girls until she is able to fend for herself. He was concerned about her weight loss (she is very thin) but she should put on weight once the anti biotic has kicked in.

She seems to have gotten much better over the past few days- she is generally more alert and active, she is eating much better and steadily getting stronger. I'm just worried that I'm keeping her alive- when in reality she may not recover. The vet seemed to think she was far too 'feisty' to put her to sleep though! That point was proven when she protested (rather dramatically) to being given her anti biotic!

Anyway, she will be back at the vet tomorrow tea time for another check up. The vet will have another look at her, and I have requested that he will give me an honest opinion in her chances of making a full recovery. She may well need another anti biotic, to help completely clear the infection, but we'll see how she goes!
