Breeders in the NW?

Recommended Posts

Hi, just wondering where people near Manchester have bought their hens. I found two places online, has anyone used either?

Happy Chicks (http://www.happychicks.co.uk) seem to have lots of different breeds and they seem to care for their hens well, so I'd be happy to get my chooks from here, although it is a bit far...

Cheshire Chickens (http://cheshirechickens.no-ip.co.uk) only sell Warrens and don't have much info on their pages.

Can you recommend either or some place else?

Hi, I am also in the NW and would recommend that you get a copy of Practical Poultry magazine, which contains a Breeders Directory giving details of breeders in all areas of the country. There are quite a few listed for the NW. I'm afraid I don't know either of the places you mention, but I'm sure that other forum members who do know them will be along shortly!

I live in Manchester and I've got 6 hens. The first 3 were from Happy Chicks and the 2nd 3 were from Storrs Poultry. Both are excellent places and the chickens are beautiful. One advantage of Storrs Poultry is that it is closer to Manchester than Happy Chicks but both places are great. :D

Got my chooks, but decided to do some more research in case morehens disease gets worse. :D Found both of the places Jill recommended online and would be happy to use either, but also came across a flyer mentioning a place called Torkington Poultry, has anyone heard of them? They don't seem to have a website, but according to the flyer they've got pure breeds, including some rare breeds and hybrids. Might be worth a visit!

Hi, I got my 4 Blackrocks from Happychicks, excellent service and they really do care for their hens, I have constant contact with them as I am still a newbie and they are excellent with guidance etc.

I live in the Stockport Area and the trip was approximately 1 hour but worth the time.

Migsy - Yeah it's in Stockport area. Just wanting to keep my options open! :D

To tell you the truth we prolly won't be using Storrs Poultry again, for the silly reason that the last mile or so of the road is not in a great shape, Hubby was panicking about breaking the car and I think we could have walked there faster! :D Hubby thought Happy Chicks was a bit far, but now thinks it's not a bad distance as long as the roads are ok.:lol::lol:

Hope the future hen keepers in the NW will find this thread useful. As a complete novice I found it reassuring to know that others here were happy with the breeder before going to get the chooks. :D

Green, Do you know whereabouts in Torkington ,Torkington Poultry is? I often drive that way but have never noticed any poultry breeders.

I agree this thread is really useful for us NW chickenites, always good to find out about new places and share recommendations.

To add to the list, there is a breeder on the Strines road from Marple to New Mills, no website, but easy to find with their chickens for sale sign at their gate.

Njoy - For some reason they haven't put their address on the flyer  , but if you're interested here's their phone numbers 0161 419 9124 or 07890 997 896 (the only way to reach them as far as I know!). I was going to give them a call to ask for the address so that I could go and have a look, but if anyone else is going before I manage a trip, please share your experience! :D

(I still need to get a run extension before I can get any more chooks! :( )

The phone number for the Strines man is 0161 4498123

we have bought chickens from him and from Storrs. the poultry at Storrs are kept in less nice conditions, but the birds themselves were in very good condition and very friendly. They have a very good range of breeds. The bloke at Strines does not vaccinate his hens and the first thing we have done with our new ladies from him is give them antibiotics (his advice) and worm them (obviously necessary). all the birds I have seen from him have been on the small side, but he does have some amazing breeds to go and see, if not buy (way out of our price range!). He is also very friendly and invited us back in the summer to let the children run around his farm.
