RobJo Posted September 20, 2010 Share Posted September 20, 2010 My 4 girls have been clipped and we have now had them just over 7 days and we are starting to open the run so they can FR whilst supervised, 2 of the girls came out this evening and jumped onto the coop nest box appx 2',as a newbie to this I panicked and looked around the garden and we have 5' fence all round, the coop is next to a fence and now Im worried they will jump onto the nest box onto the coop and over the fence to next doors dog (scatty dog wouldnt trust it with the girls), how high can they jump and has anyone experienced their girls jumping over the fence? goodinparts Posted September 20, 2010 Share Posted September 20, 2010 My little darlings have started to hop./flap onto the top of the fence (standard 4' chicken wire) and then plummet to freedom.......so I've reclipped their wings tonight. They didn't seem to have grown back hugely - so i'm a little concerned that this may not work- I can't have a WIR so if I can't keep them in the playground, they'll have to be restricted to supervised FR time - which will be really sad as my chicken watching hours are sadly limited. stoice Posted September 22, 2010 Share Posted September 22, 2010 Could you put a line of cable (Something soft like washing line wire stuff I mean) out from the top of your fence from maybe a few hanging basket brackets? I'm thinking like a safe version of that barbed wire you see on those bent concrete posts above a chain-link fence. It'll be too thin to perch on and would stop them landing on the top of the fence and hopefully stop the escaping. Never tried it but it could work. goodinparts Posted September 23, 2010 Share Posted September 23, 2010 Thanks...I might try the extra line idea - can see how it could work - though yesterday there were no escapes & I watched Barbara make a couple of abortive flap'n hops - so perhaps her earlier success was just a fluke and the wing clipping has actually made a difference. I can but hope ...But bidding on a cube with extension on eBay too in case they do need to spend longer confined to quarters. A WIR just isn't an option in a vicarage garden, I fear. goodinparts Posted September 23, 2010 Share Posted September 23, 2010 It's not the prettyness but the fact that we're not likely to be here for more than a few years at most, so doing things that are likely to have a lasting impact on the garden isn't that good a plan.Really frustrating - but to be fair to the rest of the family, I don't think anyone anticipated the sudden onset of MoreHen disease....Now it feels like a bad time to suggest that I spend £££ on a cube, even tho it's just up the road.
