Hi, Mr RIR here

 

One of my girls penny keeps getting this illness.

 

I would go out to check on them in the evening and there she would be asleep ina corner of the run, as I open the gate she would wake up to see me coming over to pick her up and let her out for a run in the garden.

 

She would pick and scratch a bit, with little intrest, and then go under a bush and sit down. She would then fall asleep quite obviosley sore as her bum would be pulsing.

 

She would stay there until I come to put her to bed.

 

About an hour later I would check on her, she would be in a corner of the shed, asleep still with a throbbing bum. but her companions would be up on the roost alert and as healthy as trouts

 

 

I leave her alone to sleep hoping for the best

 

Next morning she's fine however there is watery gunk left for me on the shed floor, it looks like egg content mixed with a bit of diarehhae (did I spell that right? )

 

this happened to her yesterday, the time bfore that was 3 month ago, and 3 months before and so on...

 

Could someone please tell me why this is happening, my own theory is that an is produced inside her without a shell and it generally mucks up her insides.

You are right, it sounds as if she is producing the odd soft egg. They cause them some distress as they are painful to pass. The hen generally perks up straight afterwards.

 

Cutting back on treats and ensuring that she has an adequate supply of soluble calcium in her diet should help.

Agree she'll be laying a softee. One of mine does them on and off. Beforehand she is hunched and not interested in anything and producing lubricant and sometimes clear and yellow and white fluid. After she is back to normal.

 

They eat the soft eggs though so quite often I just find wet bedding in the nest box. Have a look at their faces you may find evidence there, the dust sticks to any wet areas around their beaks.

***Update***

 

Yesterday penny was fine (yesterday being wednesday). she was perfect during the day, however when I went to check on her at about 5.30 she was in the nesting box. This could only mean three things:

 

She was laying her egg later than usual

 

She had gotten broody very fast

 

Or she had another softie coming her way.

When I put the girls to bed she was still there, i had to lift her up to collect the eggs but when I did "SQUIRT" she shot scower all over my hand not excactly what you'd call pleasant!

Today (being thursday) she's fine at last.

Now I have a question:

 

How do I get calcium into her diet?

Naturally through veg such as broccoli or mixed poultry grit. Supplements like limestone flour from horsey places which you stir a spoon in feed or liquid ca such as zolcal D which you put in food or water but just for a week. Hope that helps

Chances are she is getting the calcium she needs just isnt absorbing it

 

A drop of cod liver oil added to the feed will help calcium absorbsion
