Guest
They look relatively small (compared with other turkeys I've seen lately) lesley - what sort of weight will they be for Christmas?
Lesley
They do mix with the dinners Ginette - they were supposed to be separate but the get through the fence We're just changing the fencing to make the division more permanent. They won't be enormous turkeys Shona - you can choose which eventual size you would like when you buy them as chicks. These are Plumpys....... you can get Minis (small) and Roly-Polys (large) I think we've got a Mini in with three Plumpys I can't remember what weight last years grew to ........ Ginette? We had one of those days yesterday.............. I'd been out all morning and didn't get home until 3pm.I found a message from the abattoir - all our meat was ready We were supposed to be collecting it today - late afternoon! Carl had to leave work, travel 30 miles and then we had to go straight off to the abattoir in the opposite direction. I've never seen so much meat all in one go! It completely filled the back of Carl's car We'd made freezer space but we were going to sort out the Brewery on Monday evening......... We had to sort it out around two lambskins on the floor Today, I'll have to start two whole sides of bacon cut into 12 large slabs, start two enormous hams and make about 25lbs of sausage, clean and disinfect the sausage machine which the previous owners sold to us. We realised when we went to the freezers that as well as the small freezer that we wanted to defrost, I'd switched off one of the main freezers Luckily, it was a cold day and the freezer was fairly full and all was still frozen. Today, I also have to help my son to remove the toilet which has been leaking for months and sort out where 'they' may have hidden the controls for the shower!!, sort the man for some clearance and strimming work and Matthew is coming to see what we need doing next so that he can order all the materials for the next lot of fencing - he's coming in two weeks time............ and i have to remember that Lauren and Jake will need picking up from school and feeding! What am I doing in here?????
Lesley
Forgot to say Our first lambs were excellent!!!!! We weren't sure about sending them because Shetland are small at the best of times.......... They came out at around 15kg each and the condition was good. The condition is something you just learn........ there is a range of 1-5 and you tell by feeling them along the back near to the tail.......... Condition 3 is best and we thought ours were about 2 and three quarters and we were right! I have a photo of the chops - I'll post it later........ Guest
Turkeys: I can't remember the exact weight of last year's Lesley. I asked for 16kg but it ended up smaller than that, maybe 12-13kg? But everyone agreed it tasted completely different from the turkey we usually have and absolutely delicious. "Ooops, word censored!"ody's going to miss my Christmas dinner willingly! Lesley
I don't know about partridge Clare - we lost a quial to rats yesterday Our numbers are going down not up We've tried to bait the gap where the rats got in but it is between the quail run and the pen next to it with the 2 remaining cockerels in. The rat went along, then into the cockerel run and then under and into the middle of the quail run - all in one nght We've made the spare wooden ark into an 'isolation ward' in case it was ever needed but the rats have moved in under that as well, so probably not a good idea to put anything in there
Louise
Have you tried stuffing poison bait into something the rats have already eaten Rats are very clever with poison they will try a small bit of something new and if they are okay eat the rest If it is something they have already encountered they will probably just eat it and if the bait is stuffed inside it you may have a better chance of it working Rats are unable to vomit and this is how rat poison works their body can't get rid of the toxin but this makes them very cautious eaters
